Control surface question. Assigning controller numbers.

OK I am setting my MPK 25 to work with X2. Even though there is s "Sonar " preset in The MPK, it (as many know) does not work at all. Also there is no help in sonar either closest preset is for the larger model with sliders. I want the knobs to do channel volumes. I have set up surfaces before but wonder should I use controller numbers that are "not assigned" ie: 20-31. Seems most numbers are "taken" and I am afraid to use something that might cause a problem. I have read some people just start with 1 and move down the line but wouldn't that possibly interfere with something? What is the "common" way of choosing numbers to use for your whims?

I'm not familiar with the MPK 25 so forgive me if I'm completely offbase but when ever I modify any preset I almost always create a copy first or do a save as. That way if what ever I do goes south, as they say, I can always revert to my previous version.

    Regards,
