But, well I bet you guys already know this or at least some of you do-
There is NO Win 8 Upgrade DVD-they never made one-they just call it that .

I installed W8, everything was hunky dory. Then woke up one morning, turned the pc on and no sound, no mouse, no keyboard.

Did a "replace" restore which effectively wiped my "C" HD.  Disk image corrupt. The total.

Took me three days to correctly re-install and re-activate everything.

All audio data is of course stored on a separate HD which is regularly backed up. Ouf !!!

So i'm now back to W7 and will not even think about re-up grading again in the forseeable future.

    My 2€ cents.

    Cheers,
    Jerry

Yep, you can do a clean install. Just do a Google search for Windows 8 Clean Install and you'll find a bunch of articles on how to do it.

Strat you really should have asked me. Unlike Vista that required 2 installs for a clean install of the upgrade disk Win 8 is just a simple matter of install it and be done.  For me it was the easiest install I ever did. Also for the first time I felt I could actually leave the room while it did its thing.

As a matter of fact I don't no how to install it over another OS as an upgrade. LOL

I'm glad you got it all sorted out.

I had cause to call MS support some years back and the guy I got was in India. Clearly you did not get this guy because he was tenacious in his helping me. It took a long time and he even had to call me back but he did so quickly and he walked me through how to fix the problem. He was patient and thorough. I have nothing but respect for him and how hard he worked for me.

well, like I said you guys probably knew already (see op) I did search google-first 2 said no way-so I stopped. But actually had another issue-the iso that I downloaded was no good. Verified fine when I burned it to disk but that just verified he burn, not the iso itself. That really su^$5^.
Finally got my "other" copy-bought it on amazon weeks ago. Used that and even used the dowenload iso key. Worked fine.
I do remember when the key depended on the type of windows media-remember that crap-oem or with sp1 or w/o sp1.
Gues they didn't do that either this time.

I'm ok-my only regret is I may not have time tonoght to try my brand new Octacapture :-) Looks pretty though

Thanks guys. I will post back to the orig thread I started about the OC and USB 3.0 ports after I know for sure

That was a question I have not seen answered anywhere. So the boxed version Windows Pro Upgrade DVD's will work using a key purchased via the online upgrade assistant at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/upgrade-to-windows-8 ? I assume that the DVD you use has to match the version of the upgrade you downloaded. In other words if you use a machine running a 64 bit OS (XP, Vista, Win 7), which is going to download an ISO of the 64 bit win8Pro, you would only be able to use the 64-bit DVD version from the box to match with that key? Or were you able to use a key purchased from a 32 bit computer to install 64 bit boxed DVD or vice versa?

I think the boxed DVD version includes both 32-bit and 64-bit, although, I'm not totally positive about that.

Yes so did I. The key from the download Version I got for $14.99 (new laptop promo from MS) The key worked fine-running smoothly. The download was x64-no x32. I had to choose.

    From MS website:

So how did you guys do a clean install? Or are you not activating the product????
    Why can't I activate Windows?
If you received a message saying that Windows couldn't be activated, here are a few reasons why it might not have worked, and some things you can try to fix the problem. For additional help with the activation process, contact support.
You upgraded to Windows 8, but didn't have a previous version of Windows installed (error 0xC004F061) If you see error 0xC004F061 when you try to activate Windows 8, it means that you're using a product key for an upgrade version of Windows 8 and a previous version of Windows wasn't on your PC when Windows 8 was installed. To install an upgrade version of Windows 8, you must already have Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP installed on your PC.
If you formatted the drive before the upgrade version of Windows 8 was installed, you won't be able to use your upgrade product key to activate Windows 8. To activate Windows 8, you'll need to install your previous version of Windows, and then reinstall Windows 8.

Call MS as soon as you can. You may be able to contact them now. I don't know that for sure though.

Before you do call you might try doing a reinstall and use the key that came with the DVDs.

    Hi John

I tried. they are out for the day. What a day. I have 2 legal paid for copies of Win Pro and I cannot activate. Meanwhile, like I said the MS tech told me there is no upgrade DVD and I could do a clean install. He neglected to tell me I would not be able to activate it? It's useless now - cannot get past the activation screen.

    Great tech support :-(

Good night John and thanks - Tomorrows another day.

My biggest regret is the Octacapture sitting here staring at me with sad eyes - I know it will work on my desktop so no point in that-it's for the laptop with the usb 3 ports.

I've installed it for a family members machine.. from a clean drive as I *HATE* the mess of having an old OS sitting in the background.. just to verify their stuff..

but then I see online "Oh you can't run say win7 and then the upgraded 8 on the machine".. yet they want you to install the older OS to put the newer one one ;) make ya mind up hehe

I had to ring em, to get it activated.. I was hung up on first time... I was *FURIOUS* .. 2nd time I got someone with a brain and it took 5 minutes if that. I wouldn't have bought it , if the upgrade price is higher, which it will be soon.

When I upgraded, I decided to buy a new drive, installed Win7 64-bit on that (I was running Win7 32-bit on my old drive but had the Ultimate DVDs), then just went right to the MS site and upgraded to Win8x64. So I guess that's about as clean of an upgrade as you can do without doing a fresh install of Win8. I was probably just lucky, but it was the easiest Windows upgrade I've ever done as far as hardware goes. Even my Win7 AudioFire drivers work great. It's ridiculous, but I've got XP on one drive, Win7 on another and Win8 on the new drive (plus a fourth data drive), so I get three OS's on the boot menu. Win8 has worked out great for me, though, so that's where I've been for the past few months.

Core2 6600 2.40 GHz, ASUS P5B Deluxe, 8GB RAM, GeForce GT 630 2GB, 3 Seagate Sata, Echo AudioFire 4 asio, Windows 10 Pro 64-bit, Sonar Platinum, Cakewalk by Bandlab

yep , I have and they did.. they give you certain things to type in. took 5 minutes..

it's a pointless exercise really , they could have just got you to type in the OLD xp, as well  or whatever number and save time.

Unlike Vista that required 2 installs for a clean install of the upgrade disk Win 8 is just a simple matter of install it and be done.

If you're referring to the very same method that works for Win7, there's actually an easier way involving a simple regedit tweak and a command line thingy... one install, not two... Clean installs def the way to go... mind your license p's and q's, kiddies... :)

I actually updated over Windows 7 x64. I had some issues with it. I found a function in Windows 8 called "refresh"
It did a fresh install on my C: drive and put all of my docs in a "Windows Old" file.
I had to re-install all of my software, but I ended up with a nice clean installation.

Once again today the MS Techs assured me that a clean install is possible and there are NO upgrade DVDs available.
So this is 2 different techs-weird.

Anyway,as I said above all is well, just wanted to mention a feature I found also that's great.
Built in Recimg.exe command line. What you do is make an image and that image, when placed where the info tells you becomes your "refresh my PC" backup like Joeb mentions above.

Now that is cool. IMHO(I can post the steps or you can google the exe)
