ADAT I/O to computer: least expensive interface????
ADAT I/O to computer: least expensive interface???? Been using a EMU 1820m for years. analog I/O 8 channels MIDI I/O 2 in 2 out ADAT I/O 8 in 8 out I use the ADAT to connect a mixer. The EMU appears to work fine now with win 8 64 and X2, and 8.5.3, even though the drivers are 2 years old. But it does not work with the Faderport, with any OS. After way too much wasted time, I figger it is the MIDI drivers. So, thinking about replacing the EMU. Problem: finding an ADAT I/O card / or / an interface that provides ADAT to computer transition. I need some guidance: least expensive audio interface with ADAT-to-Computer. I don't need mic-pres, got those with the mixer. J

I'm a little confused, what will you be plugging into this ADAT device? you said you don't need mic inputs because those go thru the mixer - does the mixer have ADAT out? if not you still have to have some kind of converter from the analog outputs of the mixer. also, what do your speakers connect to? if you're using the analog outputs of the EMU for your speaker connections then that's another function of the audio interface which needs to be addressed. if ALL you need is ADAT then a lot of computers now have ADAT on the motherboard with the onboard soundcard. if you need inputs and outputs as well, then what are your needs for those?

Don't be a little confused. Be a lot confused. It is more fun. "I use the ADAT to connect a mixer. " The emu provides 8 analog in and 8 analog out: synths in, out to speakers, reamping,... The ADAT is I/O: to and from the mixer. If I replace the EMU I will need analog, and midi, and ADAT. With ADAT I/O, I can get by with 4 analog ins/outs. I have a stand-alone midi interface to use if the new audio interface does not have it.

oops - sorry I did miss that part! I think the cheapest you'll find is the Behringer ADA8000. it does come with mic pres, but you don't have to use them - you can use the alternate line inputs instead. and it has more than you want, 8 each I/O. it does not have MIDI, but it does have ADAT. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ADA8000/ NOTE: I didn't mention MOTU or RME because you asked for "cheapest"

I think the cheapest you'll find is the Behringer ADA8000 Note that the ADA8000 is just mic preamps with 8-channels of A/D to lightpipe and lightpipe to D/A. It's not an audio interface. If you don't need to work at samples rates above 48k (8 channels above 48k requires SMUX - two ports): - Presonus Audiobox 1818VSL ~$499
- MOTU Track16 ~$549
- RME Babyface ~$749
- RME AIO ~$849

sorry - I just realized that's not going to work either. it has ADAT but not USB or Firewire to get the signal converted into your system. I guess I'll just back out of the thread now... Jim - yes, I was typing the same time you were.

Thank you Mister Jim. I had looked at the presonus but overlooked the adat bit. Mainly because I was thinking the adat had to be part of a pci interface. And not "needing" all the mic inputs. It should play nice with the faderport. The motu is nice too. Amazing all that stuff can travel through one usb port. Time to start shopping.

It might be the best piece of gear they've made. Yeah! The things Behringer produced in early 90ths is high end quality component, transformers same type of quality components used in API, SSL and Manley products today. Products like vintage Ultrafex II EX3100 etc assembled in Germany. Those vintage high end products you can't even find as discontinued products on Behringer website. Today Behringer products are made with cheap component from china made and assembled in Asia etc. Not the same thing. Don't take me for bashing on Behringer, its still very good value for the money you spend but its not Manley, SSL, SPL. On the Gearslutz the did many blind test on ADA8000 Vs Lynx Aurora VS Apogee and other.. I was really surprised how good ADA8000 did sound. I can still hear the difference on the more expensive converters VS ADA8000 but still for the money, its just amazing great product. Sounds solid and clear! Here some test...there are many more.. http://www.gearslutz.com/board/gear-shoot-outs-sound-file-comparisons-audio-tests/335267-lynx-aurora-16-vs-behringer-ada8000.html http://www.gearslutz.com/board/low-end-theory/98109-ada8000-sound-samples-you-vote.html ADA8000 product link are here http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/ADA8000.aspx
