New original rock song (Lose that Tone) from my band Wallow Sound. Mix Crits welcome

This is the 1st song that will be released from our second record.  Many of the songs for this album are not even written yet but we have been playing this out for a while now though it was not ready in time to make it onto our 1st release.
We have been getting a lot of fan requests for this song to be released so we made it one of the 1st tracks to get laid down.  I am still tweaking it here and there but it's pretty close at this point.

I am on rhythm guitars & back vocals on this one.  Thanks for listening!

You're right, Chuck.  This is close to being radio ready.  I enjoyed the song and the lyrics.  The mix had enough drive and energy to capture my attention all the way through.  Good job with this one!

The bass is more prominent than the vocals. If you're in the mood feel free to tweak that right there.

    Love the tune.

Thank you all for your comments. I really appreciate your time spent checking it out. -James, I know... I am getting a lot of pressure from within the band to make the stuff more low end heavy (leaving more bottom end rumble in there)and on this song the bass tow more of the line down there than the kick so I had to mix it that way to pacify them. At this point I think I need a little more gain vox, the guitar lead needs to come up, and I am going to tweak the drums a bit more.

SWEET!  dude this very much reminds me of Limp Bizkit and also Vertical Horizon in some groove places in the verses. get it out there it's so radio ready & catchy & furthermore close to the pulse of 2001-2010 era sound that is rapidly disappearing just like the wonderful 90s.

    love it!

Great tune, Chuck. Agreed about the bass needing to back off a db or two. Just don't lose that nifty whoomph that leads into and out of the breaks.

I don't know that I'd necessarily bring the vox up through volume, though. You might be able to leave the level right where it is and carve a hole for it with EQ instead. Try automating a broad dip around 1KHz on the instrument bus that takes a couple db out of the instrument mix during vocal phrases. It's tedious work but can let you bring out the vocal from a dense mix without actually turning it up, thus sustaining the energy of the instruments.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Nice work there Chuck... I agree with the others on the low end...

I also know what the band is saying and wanting... maybe that's why it's a good idea to have a disinterested third party mix/master the tracks.

    However....

With proper EQ and compression you can lose the "woof" and keep the punch and bottom end. That would satisfy the band I'm sure.

Best of luck,... you got a good song there.

    Cool. .Listening on a lapper.

Love the very start (foo figthers type riff).

Vocals awesome and some great energy and grit there.

The squirelly lead guitar was a bit too prominent for me in places with the lead vocal.Cant comment much on the bass.

3:08, love that solo vocal breakdown :-), makes this song IMO and its what I remembered when it finished.

Really good tune and excellent performances.  I'd like to hear a bit more of the vocal, but that could be a taste thing.  Well done.

    Hey Chuck
This tune ROCKS!  Great work on the vox harmonies.  Mix sounds good on my end but could use a smidge more mid and low end depth. One of your best IMO.  KUDOS!

    Hi Chuck,
Wow...nice work. I don't know that I'd change much. Incidentally, are the drums a live mic'd kit or a sampled set?

Daren- Thanks man, I assume the Limp bizkit your picking up there is the bass's tone and drum groove in the versus.  I don't really see it, but I'll take it!  Thanks man

Bit- Yeah the kick sound I had kind of rang there to start with and gave me the idea,  I then added an instance of Session drummer with just those kick hits & detuned it to get that sub low BOOM.  I am tweaking it now to give it some mids too, as I found that effect is inaudible on small systems like a laptop on this mix.  Thanks for the tip on the vocals.

    James- Thank you sir.

Herb- Yeah it has been trying at times dealing with the guys.  I want to make it more sonic-ly correct?(if that makes sense) but I see their point too as most other music in this style is mixed for earbud listening.

Whack- yep on a laptop you don't hear as much of lows in his voice and the guitars get tangled in the upper end of his vocal.  The vocal break is fun, and has just enough cheese factor to get the crowd involved at the live shows.  haha  by the time we get to that 3rd pre-chorus they are singing along with it.

Philz-  Thanks bud, I am fixing that now.  I find I often get "done" then later have to bump my vocal tracks by about a half a Db almost all the time because I have heard it so many times that I mix it a hair low.

Dan - Thank you for your time and the kind words!

    Kev-I am working on it.

Dean-Thank man, The drums on this were recorded midi with my Roland V kit and sent through EZ drummer.  Then I tweaked, eq'd and used some parallel compression techniques on them.  They will sound better/bigger in my revised mix.  P.S.  I love that you couldn't tell and had to ask!

    Hi Chuck,
That actually makes a ton of sense on the drums...from an audio perspective they sounded like they might have been sampled or had lots of heavy drum replacement/reinforcement done, but they playing sounds like a real live person. In any case, they sound fantastic.

Thanks nonat! That's me! =) I tightened up the lo end in my new mix by upping the Q on my HP filter on the bass guitar, and then tweaking the kick sound to let it thump a hair more without the masking effects between the two. I will be posting it shortly.
