Flaming Gout!

This started on Saturday afternoon, and as of now, I can still barely walk.

I blame my father. He blames his father, and so on.........

And no, I don't drink Port, or red wine.

Sympathies Colin. I have a friend who had chronic gout for many years, sounds like agony. Someone advised drinking cherry juice..?

Anything to break up those uric acid crystals.

I've tried most remedies James - normally an attack will only last for about 24 hours - but this is day 5 now - can't operate any stomp boxes

And no, I don't drink Port, or red wine.

I feel your pain. My last attact went from October until mid December.

Like you -my attacks usually only happen once or twice a year for a few days but this one was the worst ever.

I am on allpurinol now which suppresses the production of uric acid. So far so good. If your not on allpurinol i would for sure would ask your doctor about getting on it. I plan on this last attack being the last attack. I plan to never let it  happening again, but i gotta eat better, exceercise, eat natural uric acid lowering foods and of course the allpurinol helps. And the medicine isn't that expensive.

I feel your pain. I know when your in the middle of an attack it feel like it will never stop and of the 3 months of my last attack I probably spent 2 weeks in bed becuase I could put any pressure on the foot. It just wasn't one foot joint... My whole foot was swollen along with my ankle.

For those of you who don't know what a gout attack feels like at its peak..... Take a 50lb sledge hammer and then  non stop all day ---- have the strongest person your know smash your foot as hard as he can over and over and over again...non stop

That's what it feel like when our white blood cells all gain up againts microscopic uric acid crystals

I feel your pain bro ....in fact .... I am weeping uncontroably for you

My brother gets severe attacks of it. I used to work for him and 2 or 3 times every year he'd be hobbling in to the office for a few weeks on crutches. It's also known as "The rich mans disease".

I've been getting one particularly scary symptom of it the last few years but it hasn't developed yet that I'm aware of. You don't always get joint pain, you can get kidney stones from it too. I even asked my doctor about the symptom and he just shook his head and said he never heard of such a thing, so I looked it up online and found it in 5 seconds.

Hope you get some meds and they start helping soon. It's not a fun thing to have.

    Aww that sucks!

I only get mild random issues with gout but never that severe. Garlic in large doses is very good, cleans out the system, removes a lot of those free radicals. Roasted garlic bread with herb (parsley and a touch or oregano) is nice, have it everyday, the herbs counteract the body odor. Oregano is also good for ya'.

    Hope you get well soon!

I've had it a couple of times, but thankfully the last time was well over ten years ago.

I must have been lucky to have had it quite mild because on each occasion I was prescribed something that cleared it up in a day or two.

I did imbibe in the odd red wine and port at the time though Col

Well Colin as we type, I too am experiencing another bout of gout. This time (luckily), I'm able to limp around a bit. I went through what Palmist35 went through about 3-4 years back and it feels like what Mooch says.

Those extra....extra...margaritas did it for me over the Christmas holidays.

Cherry juice (from concentrate) on a daily basis helps a great deal (also drinking lots of water), but like Mooch said, you have to completely change your diet. (You probably know all of this, but I'm still trying to convince myself about the diet stuff ).

Hey Mooch, about the alpurinol......check with your Dr. about the long term effects of that drug.....it can lead to kidney failure.

Gout is the 1st sign that your body is starting to breakdown, IF......you don't take care of it better.

Blimey Mooch - I've never suffered that long with it - but your sledgehammer analogy is spot on regarding the pain.

I had my first ever bout in 1990 or thereabouts and over the next few years it flared up in either foot, totally at random. It now only affects the big toe joint on my left foot and thankfully, I only now get 2 or 3 a year, but this has been the worst one for several years.

My last prescribed drug was Voltarol, which you can now buy over the counter, so I'm taking that along with Ibuprofen.

Thanks for all the well wishes.

Hey Mooch, about the alpurinol......check with your Dr. about the long term effects of that drug.....it can lead to kidney failure.

My doctor is the one that practically insisted on it.

The long terms effects are contraversal. However do understand that the reason for gout is that your kidneys are not getting rid of excess  uric acid fast enough due to something going on with your metabolic rate. So at this point it all ready is a kidney problem of some sort.

Studiies have also shown that people with certain renal failure have improved with allpurinol.

Gout is also something that affected a lot people with hypothyroidism. I have that and have been on synthroid since I was 15. (1985)

Bottom line is its contraversal and you may be right ... But maybe not. Do take note people have taken allpurinol for decades with no side effects.

I hear the same stuff about the sythnroid I take too. You can't win. There is a Risk with all drugs.

Taking care of yourself through healthy eating and healthy weight would probably eliminate most of our problems and then we can toss the drugs.

    Thanks Jan.

I thought it was improving a bit last night but this morning it's back to where it was a couple of days ago.

I remember one drug I was prescribed (which I think, has now been banned in the UK) called Colchicine.

It worked wonderfully on the gout, but my God - the side effects were awful! Nausea, headaches, sweating.

Maybe my english is failing me, but isn't gout the one that often is triggered by pork meat? A colleague of mine has it, and she says that even a moderate amount of pork triggers the pains, and she says it's typical of the disease.

It's one of those burdens I really wouldn't wish to anyone. Hang on, guys.

That's a new one Kalle - I hadn't heard about it before, but it's not relevant in my case.

The only pork I eat with any regularity is Becan (obviously) and sausages, and my pork consumption pattern hasn't varied at all in the last couple of years.

    "Gout" he announced.

"But I've only just walked in" I replied.

Is flaming gout different than regular gout?

I mean  does the attack with flaming gout say ... (With a lisp in a high voice) Heeeeeeeeyy foot joint I am here. The party can start now. (As the flaming gout bends his wrists and waves hands)

And regular gout says it like this ..... ( in a deep man voice) THE PARTY STARTS NOW I AM HERE!! ( arms folded over each other like a bouncer at a biker bar)

    Hah!  Nice one Mooch.

I think I've found something that works - Anadin Joint & Inflammation Relief tablets.

Started taking them about 18 hours ago and the pain is considerably less. Couldn't get my Nike's on this morning, so I've gone to work in my regular shoes.
