Still no bounce to track for Instrument Tracks?!?!
The simple "instrument track" (a combined midi/soft synth track) feature was introduced in version 7 or 8 of Cakewalk, and yet it STILL can't be bounced to audio. To this day, you still get the asinine message about "The specified selection did not contain any audio" if you try to bounce an entire instrument track or section of clips thereof. This is daft. Why should I have to split each instrument track into the component tracks (midi and synth tracks) in order to bounce it down to audio (only to rejoin it back into an instrument track) If I select all tracks (which are all instrument tracks, btw), Sonar happily bounces everything to an audio track, so this should not be an issue 4 years into this feature. Grrrr.... [/rant]

You could freeze the Synth then clone then copy drag the resulting audio to a new track. The net effect is the same, no?

I don't think so - freezing doesn't incorporate the FX when it renders - the cloned copy would not have them rendered in the copied audio track. I know it is a silly thing, but incredibly annoying that this oversight has lasted this long (I brought it up years ago).

You select the midi and audio ouput for the VSTi and the time range and then use bounce to new track. Don't get angry, get educated

backwoods You select the midi and audio ouput for the VSTi and the time range and then use bounce to new track. Don't get angry, get educated Yes that is how it works if the two tracks exist as non-instrument tracks. My point is that when you select a range of an INSTRUMENT track (where the two are combined into a single track containing the midi track and the synth track) Sonar does NOT let you do this...requiring you to split the Instrument track using the "Split Instrument Track" to make the two parts visible, you then select range for the now-two tracks, and bounce away. Afterwards you rejoin the tracks. It basically eliminates much of the utility of this feature they introduced way back when.

yeah, very exhaustive options in the bopunce to new track menu- if you want just the one vsti bounced solo it, and choose master outputs or whatever it's called. edit: possibly I'm missing the crux of the problem here, sorry about that. It's making my head hurt.

scook Isn't there an option to include track FX in the freeze options dialog? There may be, but I usually don't want the whole track - I just want to bounce a section to do some further edits or take the rendered audio clip into some other software for processing, looping, etc.

I guess, I will add this to the reasons that I do not use instrument tracks. Looked at them when they first came out but stayed with the audio+midi in a folder.

I must be missing something. I just created a simple instrument track using DimPro. Dropped a midi loop in the track. Selected part of the loop. Selected "Bounce to Track(s)" from the Tracks menu. X2a Producer generated a new track with the audio from the selection. Then selected the entire simple instrument track, did the same "Bounce to Track(s)" and it also worked. Haven't looked at simple instrument tracks in a while.

This is probably the step the OP isn't doing. Bounce To Tracks works fine on Simple Instrument Tracks here, using exactly the method you described scook. I don't use SIT's generally - there is much more flexibility using split Midi/Audio tracks

I remember reading posts in which the bounce problems concerning SITs were due to selecting the track in the wrong way. It was something about how exactly you click the track number when you select it. But anyway, I know that bouncing/freezing of SITs has worked from the day SIT was introduced.

JSGlen, I'm not questioning your workflow for one moment, but using SIT's on a drum track, does this mean all your drums are in 1 stereo track? What are you using for drum software - how do you manage to EQ & compress separate kit pieces?

Bouncing to Tracks isn't really necessary all that much since when you export your project, Sonar will automatically convert the track with effects and automation to audio as part of the overall mixing process. Nonetheless, the OP is wrong. It does work in X2a. I just tried it and I only get one track, not the hybrid MIDI/Audio track that I used to get in 8.5.

Bristol_Jonesey, Up until recently I would open an instance of TTS-1 or Dim Pro for each part of the drum kit (kick, snare, etc) so I can each each part on its own track. After fine-tuning I would bounce each part to track. I would then archive the midi tracks for later use, if necessary. Now, after learning SD3, I use it to design my multitrack drums. So much easier than the way I was working.

I follow those same steps exactly and get the error every single time whether I select the entire track or individual Midi clips of the SIT before clicking "Track - Bounce to Track" option. Since no one else is seeing the issue, I thought maybe it was my template. I added a brand new track, dragged a cakewalk-issue VST (True Pianos) to a new track - had it create it as a SIT. I recorded a couple of bars, single clicked on the clip to select it, Track - Bounce to track immediately throws the error "The specified selection did not contain any audio data." I will take it up with Cakewalk support. Thanks for the input everyone.

There should be no functional difference between clicking a clip to select it and lassoing it, so this appears to be a bug, but I can deal with it using this workaround. I found a forum discussion on this from a couple years ago and there were definitely others who encountered this exact issue and simply stopped using SIT as a result. Thanks again for the feedback everyone.

That method has never failed me. I'm sure there are other methods but I stick to that one.

Or just click-drag in the clip and select "Bounce to Clip(s)" from the track menu. No need to select the track first, the action of left-click and drag to select the part of the clip, lights the track select indicator too.
