Would you describe the Sonitus EQ as colorful or transparent?
Alright so the Sonitus eq is actually the first eq ive ever used. its cool i guess, but theres something that im looking for that its not giving me. I hear it doing its job, but at the same time its subtle, almosts as if im not hearing it at all. Now I know that im a "color" guy, (I like a little bit of distortion, saturation on almost everything), and im wondering if the sonitus eq doesnt satisfy my ear because its possibly not colorful enough. But as far as eq goes im not sure if id know a colorful one when i hear it, since this is my first one. Help me find a colorful eq? I want something that will add a distinct flavor to sound, something that will make its presence known whether adding or subtracting.

The Sonitus wont give 'color' in the same way that a Pultec eq-1a might but then, its not designed for that. Its a pretty transparent tool for the most part, brittle in the highs if used in excess but a good daily tool. The LP 64 eq is even more transparent and intended for surgery/mastering. The new Pro Channel EQ however, is pretty nice with the choice of different modes and actually has a bit of analog color to some of the modes. Still nothing like a Helios, or Neve emulation. I would love to see a nice Neve Pro Channel module and definitely a Studer or Ampex Tape deck for the next round of modules. ( Ampex if your listening Cake!!! )

Hi,guys. I just woke up so forgive me if I get this wrong. If you check the info on the PC EQ one of the settings, I forget which, is supposed to be tailored after a Neve. The settings bar is found right over the frequency graphic display. It should read Hybrid, Pure, N-style, E-style. Something like that. There is an article on the Cakewalk webpage that goes into great detail about the workings of it. While it probably is not a dead on emulation of a Neve, it is supposed to give you the characteristics of one.

Use the Vintage Channel- read the documentation by clicking the word "manual" in the middle of the plug. It has two compressors and two EQs. It's amazing. You can also use the 64 vocal channel and the 64 percussion channel- they both have more colorful EQ designed for specific material. What they cannot do, you can use the sonitus for. Surgical cuts and boosts.

Try Demo of this plugins: http://minimalsystem.com/...h=59&product_id=66 Btw to ansver your question: Sonitus Eq transparent to minor dull sounding. Many plugins if you listen very carefully, you can hear a change in the eq just a tiny bit, by inserting it into a track. For me i listen very carefully, when i insert an Dynamic processor / Effect. A little dull here and a little dull there ,will certainly affect overall sound to more dull ! Also when inserting an effect, listen to how it affect the side signal too, the wideness of your track. With training you will notice this. Listen, listen,listen............ it is like learning compression, how it affect your sound, and it takes time. for surgical non coloring editing, you could use this EQ: http://www.fabfilter.com/...ro-q-equalizer-plug-in

Isn't it funny how one person commented on the "dullness" of the eq and another person on how "harsh" it can be in the highs. So subjective. It is true that when you turn on the sonitus eq, you can hear a difference even before you do anything with it. I have on occasion turned it on and done nothing else, because all it needed was a slight thinning in the low mids (which is what it does when you enable it). Things sound slightly more transparent when you turn it on.

ASG I hear it doing its job, but at the same time its subtle, almosts as if im not hearing it at all. That shouldn't happen with Sonitus EQ. It is transparent, but it's not a 'Dynamic' EQ like Voxengo's Gliss EQ. With that, sometimes it's hard to hear a difference. Are you sure you have it enabled? If it's in the FX Bin and you hit 'E' by accident, all of the FX Bin's will be disabled. The other thing is ... less than desirably headphones, ear buds, monitors. That kind of thing. Sonitus EQ has a -18db to 18db range for each band. You should hear a dramatic difference if you grab a slider and go all the way down, and back up. The exception being, if you have adjusted a frequency for a high 'Q' and there doesn't happen to be anything audible on that particular frequency. I could be wrong, but I always thought that EQ's should be as transparent as possible. There are some tube based mastering EQ's, but even those don't really add much that's audible. If you want color or saturation, you'll need to use a Tube Saturation plug-in such as TL-64 Saturation (If you watch the video, be careful, the narrator does not start talking until 16 seconds in. I turned up my headphones thinking my volume was too low and blew my eardrums out when he started talking.). TL-64 Sat only comes with the Producer version of Sonar. There's also a Sat Knob PC Module, but the TL-64 Sat has a lot more options and sounds better IMO. I think I read somewhere that the TL-64 Sat was just updated? I think? I know a whole bunch of those older plug-in's were updated with X2. To answer the thread title question ... I consider it to be very transparent ... but I also never use any gain when I need to boost a frequency. I always bring down the other bands. It's a good habit to get in to, but it is more work. Happy EQ'ing.

Many plugins if you listen very carefully, you can hear a change in the eq just a tiny bit, by inserting it into a track. This is especially true of outboard (physical) processors or anything inserted into the audio chain. Each device adds its own color to the signal.

I do have sonitus enabled, and I do have mixig headphones and decent monitors. Also I know it's not the eq's "job" to add color, but I've tried everything else and I'm not finding the sound I want. Then one day I saw a video of someone demoing an Avalon 737, and after some subtractive eq hi voice sounded ENTIRELY different. Frequencies were cut now, yet at the same time his voice sounded twice as rich. But doing the same thing on this sonitus eq didn't sound the same at all so I figured maybe there were more "extreme" eq's to try out. The only thing I HAVEN'T thought to try is putting the eq up front, I guess on an fx send? Would a sound sent to a send eq sound much different than the exact same sound sent through a post eq with the same settings?

The Avalon 737 is a tube based EQ like I mentioned before. You won't get a sound out of a plug-in like you will that unit. You might get somewhat close, but it's not going to happen with Sonitus or anything in that category. Maybe a higher end UAD card.

Its "solid state"-EQ. Nomad Factory Blue Tube series is one of my favorites. Sounds outstanding. Better then many WAVES & UAD. http://www.nomadfactory.com/products/bt_bundle/index.html

. I use Sonitus EQs and Gates all the time. I think they're awesome, and do not find them to colored at all. They're easy to use, flexible and detailed EQs. (I don't use Waves, anymore). Sonitus EQs are perfectly fine on any track or mix bus. They can run hot, so you absolutely have to make sure you're not distorting them. IME, they're as utilitarian and professional as any console EQs I've ever used. The ONLY major difference is the digital distortion if you hit them too hard (obviously, like all other plugs). Sonitus EQs have been a secret weapon for a long time, in my tool box. I extolled their virtues in my Sonar 6 Tape Op review back in 2007. .

Nomad audio runs a lot of specials - don't know what the cost is at the moment but it is worth waiting for it to drop to $99 or whatever. It does add a tone or scrim or film to the sound if that is what you are after - some people like it and would say tone, others don't and call it a film. In my work it has a place. What is really nice are the delays and such in the entire kit. I use them all the time. The Prochannel EQs in SP are very good - that might be the way to go. Not as dark and thick as the Nomad, but they seem more dynamic, in that the harder you drive them the more they seem to thicken up. Nomad is more of a steady state tube effect. You might be able to get away w/ just buying their blue channel strip. And yes, outboard, analog gear will have a more cogent effect on the sound than most plugs, tho I know some pros who claim that UAD is close enough. Pick your poison and open your wallet. Nobody can tell you what you hear, it will be a matter or your artisic sensiblities. You might want to check out some pro studios w/ different options, tho what you hear over big montiors in a treated room might not translate as well at home. @
