UA-25-EX Electrical Noises - I think I've found where the problem comes from!!!
Hi guys,
Right, this will be slightly long winded but what I've concluded is very interesting, imo.
I've got a UA-25-EX sound card (Cakewalk by Roland) on top of it.
I've got a desktop PC and have had since 2010, throughout that time I've had electrical noises and interference coming through my speakers.
I read that my motherboard suffered from electrical hissing noises and infact there is a 47 page long thread about this very issue on this motherboard.
Gigabyte finally after a year or so found a hardware fix for the fault and have opened an RMA procedure for disgruntled customers.
This morning I sent my motherboard off to them to get repaired.
I tend to have a few laptops / PCs kicking about at anyone time as I fix them for a living and tonight I decided to test the sound card out on these machines.
The first I tested was a brand new Samsung laptop, 64 bit and running Windows 7. So I downloaded the W7 drivers for the UA-25-EX and installed, and got exactly the same electrical noises as with my Desktop PC! Arrgghh ! ( having just sent my mobo off for repair)!
I then tried a different laptop (Acer Aspire 9300 running Vista 32bit) ... again I downloaded the Vista drivers this time and installed, same electrical noises.
However I then tried a different laptop - a Compaq Mini Notebook running Windows XP... Downloaded the XP drivers, installed the soundcard, and guess what.... No electrical noises at all, complete SILENCE!
Played some music and the music played fine, no noises or electrical sounds / feedback at all.
I should mention at this point that my Desktop PC (of which the Mobo is now currently in Royal Mail transit) is running Windows 8 and I had Windows 7 before that, having the same electrical noises each time.
So I have concluded, I think accurately, that the UA-25-EX Cakewalk sound card does not work properly in any other Operating System THAN Windows XP.
It can't be a BIOS issue imo as the Acer and Samsung Laptop and my Gigabyte Motherboard must all have completely different BIOSes.
The sound card was purchased in 2010 so is obviously out of warranty now but this means that I will have to fork out for another sound card, which is mightily annoying - I'm now regretting having ever bought the UA-25-EX.
If anyone has anything to say to counter this I would be very happy to hear it.
Joel
