issues with midi to soft synth

Hi, i'm new to using sonar (and home recording) and so i'm having a bit of issues trying to get midi files to play through soft synths.
I'm using Guitar pro 5 to write out parts (bass, drums, piano, etc) and importing it into sonar as a midi file, i'v set up the midi+softsynth tracks ok, (i think!) and i am getting sound out of the soft synth track (Soundcenter soft synth) when playing back. The problem is that its missing most of the notes. i.e. of a string of 10 notes it would play the 1st and 4th or whatever notes it feels like. if i change the output to the Microsoft GS wavetable SW synth (<- standard midi player, right?) it plays fine. is it something that guitar pro does to the midi file making it odd like this? or is it a latency problem maybe?

Another thing i'v noticed is that the metronome doesn't play in time, i cant tell if its late or early but according to the PRV all the midi notes are in the right timing. and the metronome is playing in time with itself, its not sporadic or misses or anything

both these problems sound like it might be latency, i.e. cant read the midi notes quick enough to play it through the soft synth. but as i say i'm new to this and just not sure what it is. any help would be much appreciated!! Cheers!

oh and this is my set up of what i'm using:
Win XP sp3: IntelP4 2.2GHz, 1.0Gb RAM, Nvidia GeForce4 MX440.
Roland UA-55 Quad Capture,
Sonar X1 LE, Guitar Pro 5.2, Sibelius

    Welcome, Will.
Thanks for the system info. If you put that in your signature, it will always be available, and is a big help when we answer questions.

Yes, your problem is related to latency.
You should be using the Quad exclusively, preferably with ASIO.
This will give you better performance, but you will probably not have access to the MS Wavetable Synth.
If playback is through the onboard sound card, that is the most likely suspect.
The MS Wavetable Synth is probably at 500ms latency (Windows default) which gives it plenty of time to process the notes.
Be sure you are using ASIO driver mode, and the playback and record timing masters are set to the Quad.
For playback, 20-50ms should be fine.
Use the Audio Metronome, not the MIDI.
These should bring everything into alignment and catch all of your notes.

you my friend, have made my day! Thank you SO much, all it was was the driver in sonar didnt have ASIO selected, everything was set to go through the Quad tho so it was just that. everything works now! i am slightly annoyed the driver didn't default this or have any warning about this in the installation of sonar, still, it works now! :)

    Thanks Again!
