You need to make sure it isn't an ARM processor. You need to be able to run Windows 8 in Desktop Mode.

GS is correct. I know that the Windows Surface Pro is a normal i5 processor. But it also cost s much as a laptop.

FWIW, I went to Best Buy the other day. My kid's karate instructor works there and has a music degree. We hooked up my laptop to a touch monitor and played with Sonar. I ran the latency monitor and it stayed yellow while plugged into the touch screen. It never went red which was hopeful, but I decided I'd have to be prepared to not use it during critical recording in order to risk the purchase.
    .
I then went through a variety of their laptops running DPC Latency monitor. I stayed yellow at all times on every touch screen monitor laptop we tried. Of course, these were just standard issue Best Buy machines, but I thought it was interesting.

Windows 8 Compatibility: The DPC latency utility runs on Windows 8 but does not show correct values. The output suggests that the Windows 8 kernel performs badly and introduces a constant latency of one millisecond which is not the case in practice. DPCs in the Windows 8 kernel behave identical to Windows 7. The utility produces incorrect results because the implementation of kernel timers has changed in Windows 8 which causes a side effect with the measuring algorithm used by the utility. Thesycon is working on a new version of the DPC latency utility and will make it available on this site as soon as it is finished.

DPC Latency Checker for Windows 7, Windows 7 x64, Windows Vista, Windows Vista x64, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 x64, Windows XP, Windows XP x64, Windows 2000

The above is from the DPC site.

John, part of the issue on my personal laptop was that I had to leave the nvidia ge force display adapter enabled in order to use the HDMI port. Now, the monitor did have a VGA port, but we didn't have the cable, so we didn't try it. Without the Nvidia Display enabled, I couldn't use the HDMI port and this put my driver related DPC latency at around 0.3 Milliseconds. Without it, my greatest latency is 0.07 milliseconds. You are right about the Thesycon tool. I used to stay 100% green using this computer with my recording setup (disabling some devices). Now, it stays yellow but the ability to record large amounts of audio hasn't changed.
    .
So, on my computer, I would have increased risk to use a touch screen because I couldn't disable the display adapter (assuming that I couldn't disable the display adapter and still use the touch screen). My report on the other laptops is apparently not useful unless I run the latency monitor on those machines and discover specific largest latencies.

Maybe I don't understand what you are saying but how can you know anything about latency when the DPC can't check latency on Windows 8? Am I missing something?

I would ignore any readings and simply test how well those machines actually do.

My laptop has both Intel graphics (newest one with the 3rd gen i7's) and also Nvidea GT630M (2GB )
Does it make a difference on the laptop usinmg one or the other while using Sonar x2a?
    Thanks all

John, there is a tool called Latency Monitor.
    .
    It shows latency by dll.

    BillJHS,

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atom_processor

The real question is whether you can take the laptop to DESKTOP mode. If you can, then you're good. RISC/ARM processors do not support DESKTOP mode.

Just check it before you buy it or ask someone who knows on the phone. If it can go to desktop mode, you're good.

This image is from me running it on Windows 8. These numbers match the numbers on the same drivers when run on the same PC with the Windows 7 OS.

What I am saying is you shouldn't trust something that you can't be sure is working properly. No where does it state it works with Windows 8.

Because Windows 8 uses different timings your results could be bogus.

If you follow the link you will see that it supports win 8 in both 32 and 64 bit modes.

I did and didn't see that Windows 8 is supported now I do. Therefore Gswitz is correct.
