Yeah and the price jump is crazy... from $40 to $200!! I wonder how much their sales are going to drop off?

I doubt they'll be able to keep it at $200 for very long. Not if they want it to succeed. I know plenty of people who are sticking with Windows 7.

$20 might be pushing it though, Bapu.

You can get the OEM Version for $99. I never liked the idea of "upgrading" Windows 7, I'd rather install from scratch, seems to be less issues that way.

You could have purchased the $40.00 version then either migrate or do a fresh install at a later time.
I did the fresh Win 8 install but found problems with X2a & restored my last Win7 backup.
When more issues are fixed I'll restore the Win8 fresh that I also backed up.

Yeah... I went for it last night at 11:34 PM.        $40 was to cheap to pass up.

Unfortunately I chose the "Update everything" option instead of "Nothing", so I'm still trying to figure out how to get back to the point of getting the "save to media" option during the install process.  My plan was to eventually use that ISO to install on my Win7 DAW which isn't connected to the internet.

Yep, saving the ISO and then burning to DVD is the best way to do it. Then you've got the media similar to if you bought the boxed copy.

Exactly.  Since the $40 upgrade process itself couldn't be done offline I used my general internet PC with that intent.   Unfortunately the downloaded content is separated into multiple folders since I chose the "update everything" option, so it's difficult to tell exactly what the ISO would contain.   If only I had chosen that "nothing" option instead...

I've been dealing with MS Windows since Windows 3.0. One floppy disk. It was probably the most stable OS. No, actually it was OS2 that was the most stable but never caught on. It was a lot like Apple.

I'm pretty sure my upgrade price for Windows OS's has been 99$ since 95 with the notable exception of when Vista came out and I "downgraded" to XP Pro for the sheer sake of my sanity.  I think that was $179, and I was miffed.

I bit on the $59 upgrade from 7Pro to 8 because I had to buy a new computer for an 84 year-old man who lives out in the middle of 120 acres of family land, and DSL finally hit the area.  And you really need to be online to "get" Windows 8.

I have a computer that's over 5 years old, and 8 has improved its performance.  Dunno why and all results will vary, but anyone who buys 8 for 200$ should have a financial advisor.  Really.

so I'm still trying to figure out how to get back to the point of getting the "save to media" option during the install process.

You might be able to download the iso. Check the email you got with your order confirmation and product key. If there is a hyperlink like the one below you may be able to get it from that site.

    Thanks for your order!
This is your receipt - make sure to print or save a copy for your records.
If you need to download Windows, write down your new product key and enter it here

If not, there is a link on that email to order a backup DVD (about 15.00 I think) that may still work.

Let's see.... by all reports Windows 8 is tanking in the market place and Microsoft now is going to raise the price?
    Yea, that makes sense.

FWIW I've been running Win8 and it's fantastic for DAW work.
Better latency, smoother operation and so forth.
Big improvement on Windows 7 HOWEVER, for typical desktop users the dual interface is a PITA. What on earth were they thinking?

There may well be a time limit on how long your purchase will be usable. In this article Paul Thurrott says that you must use your emailed link by October 26, 2015. He does not cite a source for that. And from the way he has written it, it is not completely clear to me what exactly will expire on that date. Most likely he seems to be saying that the link in your email will no longer work to download the installer. That would not really be a problem if you have downloaded an iso. You can install Win8 upgrade on a new computer without an internet connection from the iso burned to an installation DVD, and the DVD contains everything you need to do the installation. Apparently there is nothing machine specific on that ISO, even though you have to go through the song and dance about what will be compatible on the computer you use to download it. So you do not need to actually download the installer at a later date if you have the iso.

But if the October 2015 date, means that your license will no longer work to activate a new installation, that really would be a dead end date. MS could easily enough sort out which Product Codes were issued via the introductory offer, and invalidate any that were not entered into their activation database by that date, but that seems pretty unlikely. They have enough trouble with people who need to re-install and reactivate already, without creating an army of zombie product keys and angry customers.

No, there's no time limit on the install, just on the download link.

Here's a comment from the author further down on the page...
"No, this has nothing to do with product keys expiring. This is the availability of the web-based installer that will accept product keys. You can still download an ISO or USB-based installer and install that way."

So MS had "Windows ME" and now they have "Windows EH" ? If i had been on the ball I may have bought it for 40 bucks but I wasn't and there is NO way I am going to buy it for 200... I'll wait for the next deal. I suppose one can still buy Windows 7 somewhere? I'd like to ungrade my wife's office computers to W7 after a cleanup. They are running XP and have gotten bogged down.

Oh well, I will figure that out next week...
