MIDI RECORDS TOO EARLY
MIDI records too early:
Programs: Sonar 8.5, X1, X2, X2a Producer
I know a few others have mentioned this problem but I thought, if we could all run a few tests together, share some ideas and post within one thread, we could come up with a solution to the problem.
Hears what's happening on my end:
My MIDI performances end up planting before the beat. (I am not anticipating the beat in my performance. I've tested this over and over...it's Sonar.) It's about a 64th note ahead every single time. I can slide the whole performance over to the right after I record and everything will fall right into place.
What I've been able to determine from my end is that the Latency present in the recording appears to be compensated for by any pre-recorded audio being played EARLY, DURING RECORD by the same amount. So, If I record an audio performance to a prerecorded audio track, everything lines right up during playback. But if I record a MIDI performance to the same audio material, the midi lands exactly where it was played, which is too early. So, although it SOUNDS correct during the record of the performance, during playback it appears too early.
This bug appears when Cakewalk changed their Metronome engine a few versions ago.
Those with a good EYE can see this bug in action by watching the Piano roll during record. You'll actually HEAR the click before the floating line hits the beat.
I've changed computers, modules, and control surfaces and the problem has never gone away.
I know others have experienced their own version of the MIDI TOO EARLY bug. Some have posted even more severe cases of this bug. Can others join the thread and offer solutions or observations so we can get the people at Cakewalk to look at this seriously? So far, they have gone so far as to admit that the problem exists, but have not escalated the issue enough to resolve it.
Thanks to all who join the thread.
