Tempo Map, Gradual Tempo Change and Artifacts

I'm a newbie and yes I have the read the manual so here's my question.  I'm using all midi, no audio and one of my virtual instruments has a heart beat sound.  I want to have it gradually speed up so the heart beat is "beating faster"   To my understanding I just open up the tempo map and draw in my tempo changes and the midi should follow those changes?  Is there anything else I need to do?

I also understand that when you're working with audio and you change the tempo drastically, you'll likely bring in artifacts (which I didn't know what they were but quickly found out after trying to do this with audio).

Will any artifacts be introduced when I export my project as audio?

No, there won't be artifacts because you're only using MIDI, so what you hear during playback is what you'll here in the exported file.

In addition to the Tempo view, you might want to try using the Insert Tempos feature because it's a bit easier when trying to get a series of tempo changes for a smooth change. Just choose Project > Insert Series of Tempos from SONAR's main menu.

Thanks Scott!  I love your books.  Actually I just realized something now.  When I did it with midi everything played in real time so to speak but only slower.  I want it sound purposely slowed down and the pitch to change as well.  I'm assuming I should convert it to audio and then try to do this?

You could also control pitch with a long and slow movement of the pitch wheel, which would give you the benefit of it being a non-destructive edit - meaning that you could adjust it whenever and however without having to redo the original sound.

You should be able to insert pitch wheel events to do this, and then edit them as needed, which would be more precise than trying to do it manually.

There are probably more ways to do this - it's just what pops into my head - if I have another cup of coffee something else might swim into mental view....

Ah ha... okay, you're looking for a varispeed effect. You could try what Bob suggested with the pitch bend or yes, you would need to covert to audio. But tempo changes won't change the pitch. SONAR doesn't provide a varispeed feature. However, you could select all the audio and apply the Time/Pitch Stretch effect, but it would be a permanent change.

I guess I realize now I'm going to have to work with audio.  I was wondering how I can change the tempo over 10 measures or so from 80 BPM to 240 BPM?  I'm getting artifacts when I do this and I'm not sure what's causing this if it's the big change in tempo or if I should be using a dedicated plugin or if I should some how try to incorporate audiosnap?

Nevermind I got it!  I realized the order I had to set up the tempo change.  No artifacts!  I'll post an update if anything goes "wrong"
