Uninstalling 8.5 - will this harm X1/X2 ??

Assume this is an easy question; couldn't find the answer with forum search

I want to remove 8.5 from my computer, but keep existing X2 (and X1) installs.  Will this mess up the X1/X2 programs if I just run the uninstall for 8.5??

Thanks

    It depends how you work.

I have to leave all my previous installs in as I start projects with midi files. You can import them but that's too much work. I right click on my midi files and use the "Open with" command and select Sonar. It always goes to the first version you installed on your current OS install. I unistalled it and I could not use that command. So I put it back.

The reason I use the "Open with" command is that importing midi files does not import all the settings a midi file contains like, tempo, key, markers and other things like that. The "open with" command does that.

Removing previous versions of SONAR can result in files being deleted from the "Shared" directories which will need to be replaced by reinstalling your most recent version of SONAR.

You would think they would write an intelligent uninstall script which took dependencies and shared files into account.

The forum search facility doesn't work properly.  Use Google instead.

This question gets asked regularly and the answer is always the same: leave old versions installed.  However, you may wish to consolidate some of the folders where the resource files (e.g. drum maps, track templates, track icons, etc.) are stored for the different versions of Sonar.

The only time it makes sense to not have previous version(s) installed is on a brand new clean build, and even then, there are times when a partial install is required in order to use plugs no longer shipped with a latest version, such as the Lexicon Pantheon.

In control Panel select Default Programs, navigate to the .exe file for the SONAR version you want to have open .mid files and presto it will use your current version.

I don't want to open midi files with Sonar. If I want to play them, the media player is fine. How do you change the "open with" command to use the latest version? I looked at your suggestion and could not find the answer.

Actually here's the reason:  I have a laptop that I use only for live sound and recording.  After recording, Sonar projects are transferred off to my desktop DAW for editing/mixing.  (I.e., there are no 'old' Sonar projects ever on this machine.) Laptop currently has 8.5 and X1 installed.  It also has an SSD of limited size.  Was thinking about installing and using X2 for recording, and maybe removing at least 8.5 from the laptop to save SSD space.

None of this is critical, was just wondering how easy it would be.  Because my current setup is very stable, I hesitate to change it.  One of these days when I'm feeling brave, I'll remove 8.5 and X1, and just do a clean install of X2 on the laptop.

Thanks for the input everyone..... I'll try to remember Google next time.

If you are going to install X2 after uninstalling 8.5, you should not have any trouble at all. Both X1 and X2 should run fine. FYI, each version of SONAR adds between 100 and 200 MB of stuff that is unique to that version of SONAR (executables and config, not including the plugins and samples).

How to change file associations http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-which-programs-Windows-uses-by-default

I saw that when I went to try. The only problem is that Sonar is not an option and it does not appear I can get to it. It only gives me a few choices, none of which are any help.

I appreciate the effort. Maybe I'm still missing something.

Once you get to the "Open With" dialog, hit the browse button, then select the program you want to associate with the extension.

That did not help. All it does not is open midi files with Sonar 8. And I pointed it to the X2 producer program.

No go. I remember I did this before. I went in and deleted the file ascociations before. I uninstalled the previous version of Sonar and no matter what I did, Windows always wanted the first version of Sonar ever installed on the machine.

So, another hour of wasted time. ;-(
