Prophetic Words
I have autosave turned off. I haven't had a crash in many years. I may regret writing that. I wanted to do a little recording tonight. Turned on the music box and... "Boot disk failure. Insert system disk and press Enter". Stared at the screen for awhile wondering what a system disk was and did I have one. Turned the music box off. Folded some laundry and started the machine again. It started normally so I quickly backed up all my projects to an external drive then did a little investigating. The event ID was 7026, which apparently means a driver failed to load, but of course it can't tell you which one, just to go to Microsoft Update and reload/update all the drivers. I suppose I'll have to connect it to the web (it hasn't been on the internet in over 2 years) and do it.

I'm sorry, we can't comment unless you give us your system spec's. I did a quick search for that 7026 ID code. What I found said it has something to do with your CDROM and the article said if it keeps happening to do some kind of registry edit. From Microsoft's web site. While you're trying to fix this, enjoy some background listening music, from me to you.

You know Greg... considering what seems to happen to some people when they start updating everything if I were you I would invest in something like Acronis first and clone the drive just in case. Bub said... What I found said it has something to do with your CDROM and the article said if it keeps happening to do some kind of registry edit. I think that is good info. Take it with a grain of salt (my advice) because really I am not qualified to give advice... but if it were me I would ONLY update the CD/ROM driver or research the error message more and try to fix whatever it is in the registry. Update all your drivers and you could end up with your box working better than ever OR you could end up with more issues that lead to more issues... I really don't know but I'd proceed with extreme caution if everything has been wonderful for a few years. Jim would know the answer me? ... I just have a healthy dose of "fear of the unknown" and it never seems to work out for me when I try to fix things that aren't broke... or do a total makeover when replacing a screw is all that is needed. It reminds me of a billboard I saw Saturday for a plumber, the caption was Call us when DIY turns into OMG!! J

I haven't done anything yet. I plan on trying it again tonight and see what happens. That article applies to Vista and later OSes. I have XP. And registry entries? That's another one of those 'what is that?' things. Yeah, I know what they are, but I don't know enough about the internal workings of these magic boxes to start messing around in there. Which is why you get one of those programs to do it for you, I guess. Now, where is my Windows XP For Dummies book?

Seriously, because it isn't happening every single time, it sounds to me like a drive or the CD getting tired and not spinning up in time for the OS boot, I'd either disable the CD drive from the boot order in your BIOS or pull the data cable from the DVD/CD drive, whichever choice you find easiest, first and see if it boots reliably without it for awhile. If the Boot order in your BIOS is set to check the CD ROM first it could well be the cause of that symptom if it is on the way out. $20 for a straight swap new optical unit doesn't sound too bad if it ends up just being that.

Thanks for all the suggestions and laughs. I turned it on 4 times in the last 2 days and no repeat of the problem. Heck, I had it on for 2 hours tonight and actually recorded something. No, not "Something". Although I did give that a crack last year. Added to my unfinished projects folder. The metronome was too accurate. Totally screwed up the feel.
