Echo Layla3G-Roland Octacapture and Mackie vlz3 Mic pres?

I am trying to see how much difference I hear using my SP C1 (orig stock).
 
I honestlt do not hear a whole lot of difference. The roland is a bit crisper but that's it-tried a ballad and a screamer.
 
Is it me, are my old ears just deaf or is it possible the difference isn't that great. I have always used the vlz3 mic pres for convienence.
