Win7 -X2a Producer - Automation envelope drawing nightmare
Hi All Went from X1 32bit/XP to X2/64bitWin7 Everything is fine in X2 except drawing automation envelopes is totally messed up. When I use the Automation Draw tool - X2 religiously redraws what I just drew except 3-6 db higher Now there are a zillion complaints about the automation drawing tools, but I haven't heard anyone state this problem. I wonder if it's my mouse driver - an ancient but reliable MS optical mouse - but everything else works fine Any insights on this? Thanks much

Are you expanding the automation lanes to their full width? I find it hard to draw automation with any kind of accuracy unless they're fully expanded, and even then I find myself wishing they would expand more.

Sounds like you have it set to display envelopes on a percentage scale. Go in to Preferences > Customization > Display and see if "Display Envelopes on Percentage Scale" is checked. If you make a change, it will not effect any envelopes you have already written, but it will effect new envelopes on a different track. IINM.

From the manual ... Display Envelopes on a Percentage Scale. This option, when checked, causes new envelopes to be placed in the clip based on a range where 0 dB is in the middle of the clip. If the current volume is other than 0 dB, a new envelope is created at that location. For example a new envelope created at 6 dB would appear at the very top of the clip where a new envelope created at -20 dB would appear near the bottom of the clip. Hope this helps.

Watch out for off-set mode too... it's worth knowing about. It can cause some surprises...

Okay thanks fer your insight Doesn't appear to be related to "display envelopes on a percentage scale" approach Set up a new track - changed the option to both checked and unchecked, and restarted X2 on every trip. Basically - no matter what I do - using the "Draw Freehand" Tool, either in Draw or Line mode , I can draw the nodes or the line, and when I releast the mouse the edited points move up 3db or so. It's a real pain cuz it makes it really really hard to smooth the automation curves. Offset mode investigations were no help either - but thanks Any other ideas - and thatnks fer talkin about this !

Oy yeah - Sharke - I have the tracks fairly wide so accuracy is not the issue, but thanks!

Does the same thing happen using the smart tool to draw? I don't see that sort of inaccuracy. Maybe .4 or .5 dB which I just put down to the resolution I'm working at. Just tried the draw tool and that's about the same.

Here's an image Same envelope (pre-edit on left and post edit on right) Using the Draw tool -( in either line or freehand mode) I left mouse button over the node that has the left red arrow and drag to the node that has the right red arrow Before I release the left mouse button - it all looks perfect - the new line goes node to node However after I release the mouse botton - it pops up as shown on the right half. Don't know what the actual amount is but the bump is audible. Nobody out there with this problem ?

Can't say I see that. Is it in all projects or just one?

Well it seems to be working better now - but I'm not really sure what I did I changed some Snap to Grid settings and also edited some other envelopes (instead of just track volume) and after that when I tried editing the track volume automation the bump was smaller. And If I get in the habit of just using the Line Tool I can always quickly just move the endpoints of the line and this dumbass problem just becomes part of the work flow. Don't like it but It's moving into the manageable part of the universe. Thanks to all the commenters!
