SOS Drops Sonar Tips Column?

Someone mentioned before that Sound on Sound was failing to include Sonar now in its monthly DAW tips.  At first, I thought this was temporary since the magazine was reviewing X2 in the same issue; however, there has been no Sonar column for three months now.

What's up?

You should ask Craig.  But in the past they have at times skipped the SONAR columns, just as they have other DAWs.  And in the last year or two they have added several new DAWs - reaper, reason, etc.

From Graig if I'm not wrong its because they are reviewing X2.

I used to have a subscription to it for many years and in all that time the Sonar column would on occasion not appear. Next issue it would be back. This was also true for its other DAW columns.

I hope SOS brings Sonar tips back. It was one of the reasons why I renewed my subscription a couple of months ago.

I think its a Sonar issue that CW needs to fix ASAP!

It has definitely not been dropped, however, Sound on Sound was kind enough to send the column to a nice vacation in Hawaii. Being paper, of course it couldn't swim very much. But, if you open up the April issue and find there's some spilled Mai Tai on the Sonar column, you'll understand why.

I wish they'd sent me instead, but they said "Craig, you're only the author. The column is what people actually read." No respect.

But seriously...January had the X2 review, so no column there. February they were overbooked, and I get the impression they were so slammed they kind of forgot about March. The good news is I don't have any deadlines for a little bit because they have some columns in reserve.

They rotate out columns a lot, but Sonar is actually one of the most consistent ones because Sonar users write the magazine and panic that they will be deprived of their monthly diet of whatever fun stuff I learned about that month. So feel free to email SOS and tell them "never do that again!!" Although the column did have a good time in Hawaii.

Probably just as well, cactus. Your pasty white Canadian flesh would be crisped right off your bones. Just enjoy your rain tan and be happy no coconuts will ever land on your car, or on your head.

Myself, I'm off to the tropics on March 1st - with 110 SPF sunscreen in hand (I didn't even know the numbers went that high!) to keep my own pasty Pacific Northwest skin from turning into burnt leather. No coconut repellant, though. I've learned to sit under mango trees instead, as mango attacks are less likely to be fatal.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Thanks, Craig.  That's good to hear.

By the way, I read the other DAW columns on a regular basis because there are many tips that are applicable to all DAWs--just done with different functions or called by different names.  Plus, who knows: maybe one day I will be using Studio One or Cubase.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, by consistent I meant consistently IN the magazine, not rotated out. I wouldn't exactly say Sonar gets preferential treatment, but the readers have made it clear they like having the column in there, so it has an excellent attendance record

As to being strapped for a couple pages, believe me, I can relate. There are NEVER enough pages in a magazine for all the stories that need to be covered. If my column gets left on the cutting room floor every now and then, I of all people understand!

If there's one thing you can't accuse SOS of, it's an anti-Sonar bias. They've consistently reviewed Cakewalk stuff well and ran techniques features on CPA / Sonar for as long as I can recall (and I've bought it every month for about 15 years).

Would be cool if they would give us free stuff like computer music and beat magazines do. They don't even need to use a disc they can create a vault and give us all password protected accounts for light versions of synths and fx etc... They have better articles for sure than those other magazines which are never read very much because of all the fan boyism nonsense that they promote, people buy the zinnia version just to get the software and maybe read the ads.
