Yes Cubase is guarded territory, I could not even post on the Wave Lab 7 forum until I upgraded, only the "legacy version" forum. It took 3 months to get an answer too! Talk about dead end forums. If you don't own and register the software , you cannot post,, only read.
Just think of how many members we would loose here if it was that way, I don't own X series but enjoy helping out with none software issues here.
I got Cubase LE 5 with my Tascam interface, I wanted to try the full version but like you say you have to spend $32 and get the USB dongle. LE and wave Lab Elements use the soft licence. But then you cannot install on 2 computers, for that you still need the dongle.
I agree that the best way to share files is straight wave files or if MIDI a MIDI file as well.
I have dumped back and forth between Sonar and Cubase just messing around and it always works fine. Sonars tracks will even land on the timeline in the correct place in Cubase.
It is nice if you can have both programs open side by side, drag and drop.
