X1 Essential - using Drum Step Sequencer
Hi all, I'm just trying to find my way, so sorry if this seems a bit daft. I want to "perform" a very basic drum sequence of 4 or 8 bars using a midi keyboard to play it. It would be just bass drum and snare. Then I want to go into the Step Sequencer to play around with it a bit, but either it is greyed out as an option, or when it loads, it does not display the pattern I have just played, its empty. I appreciate most people would probably use the piano roll or some other method, but I wanted to know if it possible to do what I'm trying, and if it is, what am I doing wrong? I'm typically loading up the Rock kit from the SI Drum Synth menu option, by the way. Thanks.

Hi Angus, once you have played your drums live, right click over the recorded clip, then you should see the option CONVERT MIDI CLIP (S) TO STEP SEQUENCER. Once you have done this I think it will ask of what measure you want it converted to, once you have chosen simply right click over the clip again go to view and you should be able to select step sequencer. One more thing please could you add your system specs to your signature this will help the guys on here figure out any future issues.

Thanks, that did the trick. It does raise another question though. I can see my drum beat on the Step Sequencer, but the 4 bars that it existed in on the midi track, have seemingly become about 16 on the Sequencer. That is to say, all the beats are there, but they are spread over a lot more erm... bars. Any further clues? I tried experimenting with the resolution number in the requester that appears when you do the conversion, and with the numbers defining the Sequencer, but without success. The guy in the shop where I bought Sonar gave me an excellent demo using the Sequencer, which really sold me on the program, but as always, when you get down to it, it gets complicated.

It really depends on how well your timing was when you played it on the keyboard. When you convert things to a Step Sequencer clip, it has to move them around a bit and kind of Quantize them to fit in the step points of the Step Sequencer. It should ask you what timing you want to use when you convert it to a Step Sequencer clip, but it's just a guideline, it won't exactly preserve your freehand playing. If it's a really basic pattern, you may be better off starting it from scratch in the Step Sequencer and then adjusting the Swing for the Snare.

bang your keyboard parts out with your fingers and then highlight the clip/press Q;to quantize your notes/when this window opens up select 1/8 if they're basic 4/4 beats with no intriquete off beats.press OK./right click the clip and select;step sequencer. you will over time learn to appreciate the PRV,you can see a bigger picture of whats going on and copying /pasting little parts to make other parts is a little easier in my opinion.

Thanks for your thoughts and help. I'm coming to the conclusion that I need to temporarily put aside my affection for the Step Sequencer and get to grips with the Piano Roll view. I have tried with it, but I need to know more about how to use it and build up a proper understanding of what I'm doing. At the moment its ending up in frustration. I will bang my head some more against the manual, but I seem to get on better with youtube clips etc. Any recommendations? Thanks again.

chuckebaby im putting together a video, give me another couple days,i will have have a video that shows how to write drum parts in the prv like a snap. That would be excellent. I just watched some guy on youtube sketching in a string arrangement in the piano roll view like he was Vivaldi on speed. It was a bit of a shock just seeing it unfold on the fly like that. Wow! I need to understand this thing. edit - can't even edit a pesky follow-up, let alone some music! :)

smallstonefan Charlie, You just showed me a few things that will make my drum arranging easier - thanks for the video! Thanks James, I'm finding the PRV is really easy to create in. some are finding the "Last note touched" to be a little confusing and are turning it off but as you can see its potential in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruAnAPR6-hQ the one you just watched,it proves useful to make a virtual kit sound real. Besides it gives me a chance to show off my 37 inch monitor...lol

>>> Besides it gives me a chance to show off my 37 inch monitor...lol LOL (and that is sweet!) I hadn't seen the "last note touched" piece before, but I completely get the power now. I have struggled with Toontracks electronic kit because it looks like an alien space**** and has not drum map for it. Using PRV instead of the sequencer, I can rough in something like a ride line and just move it around to find the proper note. This will be very helpful! thanks again for taking the time to post...

Quality video mate, you make it look dead easy. Will have to try using the PRV more often.

That was great, Charlie - and very well made. Thanks. Couple of questions, is this going to be pretty much the same procedure in Sonar 1 Essential? You mentioned Session Drummer 3, I think. I assume I can just use the drum kits that can with Essential? Don't be alarmed, but your voice is brilliant. :) Thanks again.

You can do all the stuff in the video on essential the only difference is essential does not contain session drummer 3, you can download session drummer 2 from the cakewalk store however.

Angus, thanks for the props ! yes, even though you have sonar x1 or x2 essential, they both work relitively the same way with the exception of session drummer 3. but you have cakewalk instruments. these will work in the same fashion as session drummer 3 will. there are a lot of things the step sequencer can do. i just find(and its only my personal opinion) the PRV has everything right in front of you and if more people realized how easy it was they would use it more often. remember like in this video, you only need make smaller parts and & hold CNTRL/CLICK and drag to copy and make larger segmenets. but "last note touched" is what really sets the feel and sound apart from a machine to humanizing it. feel free to ask any more questions you have and even request something. i might even be able to create something else in the neighborhood of what your trying to understand. im working on 3 more vids as we speak,so if you want to subscribe to my you tube, you'll recieve notifications. Charlie Roy Subscribed! :) I'm probably blind but I couldn't find last note touched when I fiddled around on X1 last night, and in truth I'm not quite clear what it does. That aside, thanks to your video I made some good progess. It would help me even more if I had a clearer understanding of how drums actually work - but I'm getting there. :) I've cobbled together some sort of drum beat, which at least is rhythmic, and tonight I'll try and put in some SI Bass guitar, and later some keyboards with a view to ending up with something I can try and play some actual guitar over. Next year, the Fillmore! :) Thanks again, I'll watch your channel with interest.

last note touched is in thedrop down menu(to the right of the Sonar x2 logo) what it does is make the next note you create, the same as the note before. see in sonar x1 when you wanted to change the size, duration, velocity of notes, you had to stop and change values. in x2,last touched makes it so if i create a note 1/8 in size, and i make it 100 loud(velocity),than the next note i touch will be the same size, exc. it gets interesting when you have more than one note with different parameters. so rather than stoping and changing these parameters, you can just touch that note. think of it as like "styles" in microsoft word. rather than stopping to change a style for every title, imagine if you could just touch a letter with that style to change styles :) head spinning yet? :) hopefully the next few vid's will clear a few more questions up. i will also llok in to weather essentials comes with "last touched" but im alsmost positive it does. i'll keep you posted on the new vids angus, untill then hang in and keep rockin bro.
