Whohooo! I rewired Notion 4 and Sonar Successfully! Notation for Sonar!
Had a free day finale! This was simpler than i thought, should have figured this out long ago. Did so with the help of Brian at Notion. This is all 64 bit. you need LoopBe1 http://www.nerds.de/en/loopbe1.html Still workin on small workflow details, but goes like this: Load Sonar Rewire Notion 4 Notion 4 load staff from "External Midi" In Notion4 go to Preferences> midi and set Port A to go to LoopBe1 In Sonar load a soft synth patch and the midi input to be from LoopBe1 and the corresponding midi channel The midi channels in Sonar need to have Echo On...the blue button lit up. Bouncing midi to audio does not work so when you are ready to mix you must record your rewired midi track tracks into Sonar. i hope Jerry will be happy...

This is a good tip. Ultimately, I'd like to see Notion transmit MIDI data via the ReWire protocol. But this does the trick. John, ReWire keeps Notion and SONAR synced up, so they play from the same location at the host tempo.

You can create a score in Notion, Rewire it to Sonar and have it play and folow along. Now with the midi ported in and rewired you can use Notion's notation abilities to work inside Sonar. Just getting started...i'll see if I can do Sibelius also.

Thats great! I was banging my head against the table for a while trying to figure out how to get Notion's midi output into Sonar. Simply trying to export work from Notion into a midi file was not working very well (lots of extra notes, especially when notion hits a repeat section where you have alternate section endings). Thanks Jimbo!

I have a full version of loopbe that came with Harmony Navigator, so I can use that. I tried rewireing Notion and Sonar a while ago, but I could get it to work and gave up. Since I can export the parts as midi (working within the limitations and bugs in Notion's midi export), I never bothered to reattempt it. But now I see that MIDI was never output from Notion through Rewire, so it wasn't me. :) It makes sense now, so I can try it again when I my projects workflow requires it.

ahhh...I'm not so excited anymore. This works and everything, but since you have to "echo" the midi channels, it is really hard to work midi inside Sonar and Notion at the same time..a little clunky.

Bill Jackson [Cakewalk ] Ultimately, I'd like to see Notion transmit MIDI data via the ReWire protocol. But this does the trick. Ultimately I'd like to see Sonar either 1) update their staff view to get it to the point where it's usable for basic notation tasks, or 2) make a licensing arrangement with the Notion folks to replace the existing Staff View functionality with a stripped down version of Notion. Sorry Bill, couldn't pass up the opportunity...

I can undrerstand why the bakers put notation at a low priority. Going from standard notation to midi is straight forward. However going from midi to standard notation is very difficult, and in some cases impossible (when you have parallel lines moving at different times). So a program like Notion, which notation is emphesized over recordng, is very diffferent from a DAW who's emphasis is on recording. I'm not trying to excuse the bakers for not attempting to make the staff view better though, and I think outsourcing the development of staff view (or say a more direct way of embedding Notion into sonar as a replacement for staff view) would be an excellent compromise if the developers are spead too thin to work on an in-house solution.

This works and everything, but since you have to "echo" the midi channels, it is really hard to work midi inside Sonar and Notion at the same time..a little clunky. If everything needs input echo on, I was wondering how you could 'play' anything in, in real time. All of the instruments would be sounding. ...Sure could ruin a soft solo violin passage lol. The old standby of, composing in Sibelius, importing midi files to Sonar for tweaking and assigning sounds, seems to be the most straightfoward at this point. I still wish for better notation in Sonar, it would make things easier when you need to "tweek" some parts/sections. I'm still running Sibelius 6. I think 7 is X64 and can be Rewired into Sonar X64, no? I almost upgraded just to try it, then we had the whole "Avid buying Sibelius" thing...which made me a bit skeptical to spend anymore money on it.

Hey Sidroe, this thread is three years old. I gave up on the rewire thing. I've fallen back on the compose in the notation app and export midi into Sonar thing when I need notation to compose.

It just baffles me how much Sonar tries to better itself and want to draw more people to it but won't upgrade it's notation tool. When every Daw software come up with a new major update to it's platform, the Notation software portion of it is always updated. C'mon Bakers, sometime during my lifetime updates, update the notation portion of Platinum.

Supposedly Notion 6 is capable of sending MIDI via rewire. Has anyone got that version and Sonar playing well together? If so what is the workflow?

I believe Sonar can't (yet?) use the midi via rewire that Notion 6 sends. I upgraded to Notion 6 but haven't had a chance to try it myself yet. As far as I know Studio 1 can do this with Notion 6 while other daws need to use a loopbe type solution. Bummer but hopefully SPlat picks this up quickly as a way to alleviate some of the heat from the staff view aficionados.

slartabartfast Sorry to dredge up an old thread. Somehow I missed this one. Apparently the claim that Notion 6 does MIDI via rewire is not applicable to Sonar. http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3475467
Nothing I've read in the Notion 6 docs suggests to me that Presonus treats 3rd party daws differently than Studio One with respect to Rewire MIDI (I could be wrong and missed something - still going through the docs and playing with Notion 6 - which is a great upgrade btw). When I rewire Notion 6 into SPlat, the option to "enable midi out" is greyed out which suggests Sonar is either not seeing an available midi connection, or just isn't looking for it with rewire instruments. Submitting a feature request in hopes this gets fixed soon.

I already am! Sure, the Sonar notation editor needs some work and bug fixes, but it is perfectly usable, I've produced 13 albums, 9 symphonies, and many short pieces, songs and game cues with it. For scoring and notation I use Sibelius, for composition and sequencing I use Sonar. I'm not about to add another layer of rewire complexity to something that is already adequate, as my DAW has been working great for years and I want to keep it that way!
