X1 Crashes with Plug-in in Send Bus
Hello, (X1 running on a old Core 2 Duo computer - Win XP - 32bit) I'm pretty new to X1. Upgraded from Sonar 3 to X1 some months ago. I'm finally getting into X1 and now I feel comfortable enought to start mixing on it. I used to mix everything on a dual VS2480 set up. All the individual track EQ'ing and dynamics are done and I have a pretty good dry mix. I am old school. I'm used to using Send channels for FX. So I set up some stereo busses. I was able to set up a Plug-in Reverb (Izotope Reverb) on one of the buss as the main Vocal Reverb. Sounding good. I wanted to set up a "Room Reverb" using the same plug-in with a very different setting. When I drag a plug-in into the "FX area" of any other buss, now it crashes. I tried different plug-ins from Cakewalk, Sonitas etc. It doesn't seem to matter what kind of plug-in . . . IT CRASHES every time !! I can insert a plug-in into the Master Bus and each individual track with no problem. Its just any "stereo bus" that I created for my Sends are causing crashes every time I try to insert a plug-in. Anyone else running a 32bit X1 run into this problem ? This MUST be a bug. (Mine is Sonar X1 Producer - build 184) Is there a newer version of X1 available ? If so, how can I download it? When I upgraded to X1, the offer was that I can upgrade to X2 for free. I have not downloaded X2 yet. I was hoping that by now I would be on a new 64bit computer. It seems I would have to wait a few more months for that to happen. X2 is "recommended" to be installed on a 64bit system. Anyone running X2 on a 32bit XP system ?? Should I go ahead and download X2 and install it on my 32bit computer? Any suggestions and information will be greatly appreciated. Any Sonar experts from Cakewalk lurking aroud here ?? HELP ! Thanks Ed

you need to be on X1d patch. Check the support page for downloads and instructions.

Definitely look at updating X1. Unfortunately, X2 on XP is not recommended.

as per said above, included in system requirments, sonar x2 does not support xp or vista anymore, only win 7 and win8. i know alot of people that enjoy xp and it runs well for them but its over 11 years old and microsoft will soon be droping support for updates as well. id look in to an upgrade on you os soon. i hope this helps.

Hello, Thanks for your replies. I downloaded and Installed all updates from "a" to "d". I glanced at the "fixed / improved" list . . . there's a lot. I was hopeful . . . but IT DID NOT WORK !!?? I'm disappointed, to say the least. I know its not the plug-in, because it works fine in the individual tracks and the Master Out. I made a copy of the project that has ONE BUSS working. Then I deleted the the plug-in, then dragged the same plug-in back onto the same buss . . . It CRASHED. Something happened AFTER I was able to drag in the plug-in. I am TOTALLY LOST. What do I try next ? Any suggestions ? Thanks Ed

Hello, I tried one more thing that I have not done yet, that is to shutdown my computer and re-start. I did that. I also thought maybe its the somethign with the project file. I re-started the computer, Started X1, created a new project, created a new stereo buss, then tried to drag a plug-in into it . . . IT CRASHED. I can't mix without send busses. Well, back to mixing on the VS2480 for now. Thank god the plug-ins areworking on the individual tracks. At least I can use my Melodine Editor in X1 for my vocal track processing. Thanks Ed

Hi Edion2, you might want to try not "dragging" the plugin into the buss. You can right-click on the buss inserts "zone", go to AUDIO FX, then select the one you need. Maybe the problem you have lies in dragging the plugin from the browser ? Just sayin' V

Did you check the version of your current sonar to confirm it's now truly X1d ?

vlab, Y O U D A MAAAAAN !!!!!!!!! IT WORKED !!! It seems DRAGGIN a plug-in doesn't work for a BUSS . . . it works everywhere else. Very strange. I think I will get used to "Right Clicking" to insert plug-ins everywhere. THANK YOU SO MUCH !! ------- Paul P, After updates, I'm on X1d build 533, I'm pretty sure its the latest. I have the Maximum Ram allowed for XP - just 4GB. Thanks for your help guys ! Ed

I occasionally get crashes in X2 when dragging an effect from on track to another. It's a pain but I've learned to do a save before doing any kind of effect dragging.

edion2 : "It seems DRAGGIN a plug-in doesn't work for a BUSS . . . it works everywhere else. Very strange. I think I will get used to "Right Clicking" to insert plug-ins everywhere. " This is strange. Following your posts yesterday, I dragged plugins to tracks and busses (I created a new stereo bus) over and over in X1d, deleting them and trying again, and couldn't get anything to go wrong. I didn't know you could drag plugins around like that...

Hello, Update - I've been happily mixing on X1d so far. I've been able to insert plug-ins into every buss I've created. Its working as it should on all instances. Just a thought on Dragging vs Right-click. When you DRAG, the "graphical interface" portion of Windows comes into play. While you Click & Drag, the software has to keep track of WHERE on the screen the mouse pointer is. As you cross over various items on the screen, the software must decide how to respont to every pixel you touch/stop on. Its a lot of calculations to say the least. While you are just moving your mouse pointer around, it only has to calculate "mouse movement" and display the movement on the screen. A pretty simple calculation. Once you click, then other calculations takes place RELATIVE to the clicked point on the screen. No "tracking" calculations what so ever. The other thing that I just thought of is . . . I have a DUAL SCREEN. I'm using a dual 1080p 22" monitor set up. 1080p monitors are 1980x1080 pixels per screen. Thats A LOT OF PIXELS that I am working whith when X1 is stretched from one monitor to the other. I DO NOT have a separate VIDEO CARD. I did not feel the need to do so because it is my dedicated music computer. I'm using the on-board video that is part of the mother board. I may have reached some kind of a "VIDEO BRICK WALL LIMITER" that may have been causing my crashes. This is the only explanation that might make sense WHY I can insert a plug-in in one place and not others. The combination of a Buss software parameter and the "Click-drag" mouse motion is creating a conflict. Most likely a video display related conflict. I'm not going to invest in a video card for my old computer, but if you are thinking about using a dual monitor set up, adding an inexpensive video card with dual output might be a wise choice. You can pick up an Nvidia or a Radion card with 1GB memory and dual output for $50~$100. It can relieve all or most video related stress on the CPU, which is a really good thing. Just an after thought to consider. Ed
