Change default version of Sonar in Windows 7

I have an expired trial copy of X2 installed and I am keeping it installed for reasons explained in this earlier thread.

Sonar project files now display the X2 icon in Windows Explorer and open in X2 by default.  I would like to change the default program back to Sonar 7, but I can't see an obvious way to do this in Windows 7.  I know of at least two methods in Windows XP, but these don't seem to be available any more.  Even the "Open With..." facility does not work.  Whichever program I select, it ignores my selection and opens in X2 regardless.

Check if there is a registry entry in Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\SONARPDR.EXE. If so, see if the shell>open>command "Default" string points to the version of SONAR you want to run

What you might end up doing is open Sonar first and open with the file menu. I do it that way anyhow. I still have the trial version of X1 installed from a year ago. I kept it thinking I might activate it but I guess I might as well delete it.

I always open projects from inside SONAR but there has to be a way to get the original association back.

Me too.  That's the way I normally open projects 99% of the time.  However I would at least prefer see the Sonar 7 icon displayed when I browse in Explorer.

You have to right click a CWP file and select Open With, and then there is a check box or an options to set the default program for files of this type, and then select Sonar. I don't remember exactly because I'm on Windows 8 and it's similar. but different. The best way to open projects in Sonar is from the File-Open in Sonar.

If changing the association via the "Open with" dialog does not work and the registry stuff in my post above does not work, you could try renaming the X2 directory and creating a link to the SONAR 7 directory with the original X2 directory name.

Just tried it.  Didn't work.  But thanks for the suggestion.

    SOLVED IT.

Right-click on the file to bring up file properties, which includes an option to change the default "Opens with" file.  Too simple!  I'm not very familiar with Windows 7 yet.  I still have XP on my main PC.

Thanks Daveny & Scook.  I must have picked up your idea via telepathy.

Glad you worked it out. Looks like you are set until you upgrade or change DAWs.
