How Do Y'all Do It?

Hey guys,

Now that I have downloaded and collected about a zillion Loops/Samples, how do y'all go about filing or cataloging them?  Is there special software?  How do you "tag" them?

Doesn't all this take FOREVER???

I keep reading that many of them are "searchable" by Sonar, but I haven't had much luck in doing so.  Any tips?

Any advice on cataloging the loops would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers!

Tony

What I do is create a shortcut in the browser(in Sonar) to specific folders. I suppose you could set up favorites in their own folders but usually the factory folders work for me.

If you want to shortcut files you can collect those shortcut's to labeled folders i.e. "Drums", "Guitars", "Synth's", etc. but your right it will be a major undertaking.

I used to use a program called MIDI Quest.  It's a librarian software package that could also handle SysEx for saving setups and patches from synths as well.  Not sure if it's still around or not...

Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!

Thanks guys.  Mesh... I think this is the software I saw some time back and had in mind.  The link worked fine for me.  I might give this a try.

Cheers!

I tried it on chrome and firefox, couldn't get it to work, keeps giving me a 404 error.

What did you do to get it working? or if you can send me the link, thanx in advance.

The link labeled RanDrum works but the first link does not, DOH, got it sorted out where atleast I found the site, kindly disregard.

I'm not sure CT....the link above is the direct link to the software and it works fine over here (I'm at work on an older XP machine).

Hmmmmm... fyi... I downloaded the Jamsoft organizer and it did not like my computer at all.  And to add isult to injury, it changed all my desktop icons to the generic Windows icon, which I had a hard time getting them all back to their original...even after doing System Restore.

Cheers!

Wow....that sucks Tony. I hope it doesn't happen to everyone. You can possibly contact the developer (he seemed like a guy that genuinely wanted to help musicians IIRC) and see if he's encountered issues like this? I see that Win7 is a compatible OS.....so it's very odd....

Of Note, I checked Jamsoft's site (support section) and found this prerequiste to runs Samplesort: http://www.jamsoft.co.uk/wiki/doku.php

(printed below in case anyone has issues with the link)

Welcome to the SampleSort Wiki
On this Wiki you will find all the latest information about using SampleSort. The first things to talk about are the prerequisites for running SampleSort. You will need to have the following installed on your machine in order for SampleSort to function.

    .NET 3.5 SP1
Windows Media Player 10 or better
Once you have these installed you will be ready to download and install SampleSort and start working with your audio material. You will find more information and download links for these requirements below.

.NET Framework v3.5 Service Pack 1

The .NET framework version 3.5 is a core part of where Microsoft is going for interface design and creating richer 'user experiences'. This allows software developers to work with a more accessible architecture when designing the user interface for people to work with. We made a decision to use the most up to date technologies in order to make SampleSort more future proof and to allow us to do some more funky things in the UI. Chances are that you already have a previous installation of this framework on your machine so you are merely updating to the latest version. The comes in two flavours, there is a small downloadable file that will then connect live to the internet to download the whole Framework or there is a 'complete installation' file that you can download if you plan to run SampleSort on a machine that is not connected to the internet. You can get downloads here:
.NET 3.5 SP1 Web Download
.NET 3.5 SP1 Complete Installer

Window Media Player

At present the audio support is SampleSort is provided via Windows Media Player. This is a temporary solution until we have had the chance to implement full ASIO support. We understand that this is an unsatisfactory solution at present and it is our highest priority to issue a new version of the application with this support included.

Seems to be working OK for me. I got all the .NET framework packages installed anyway.

It's in the process of building a Database at this moment, will check in when I get done.

Bad News, I can't seem to get it to build a database. It scans the drives and the Browser works but every time I configure the Database nothing comes up(I have the .NET framework installed). I've spent the whole morning on this and am at the point of giving up and uninstalling.

Thanks anyway Mesh, it was worth the old college try.

I also installed it and I ran into a similar problem with the Database. I have 4 drives in my machine and the one that has all the samples is my H: drive. Samplesort only shows my D: drive (where I keep all my zipped files and some older files).

I didn't read the manual yet, and just tried to navigate through the software.....so, I can't really say I've given it a proper "go at it". I'll post back when I get more time to spend on it.
