X1 Novice - Moving Tracks Around - EASY way??
Hello, I just got a mixing project. These were created in Ableton 8. There are 53 stereo tracks. I dropped them into X1. The track names are long and does not make much sense to me so I just finished re-naming them after listening to each track. The different "types" of tracks are all over the place. I'm trying to arrange my tracks on the screen so all the "orchestral" sounds are grouped together. I'll do the same for "synth" sounds, "drum kits" etc. I'm also an Ableton 8 user. In Ableton you just drag the tracks around and you're done. In X1 I can't drag the tracks around to visually group them together on the screen. I know I can "Insert" an audio track, select everything in the source track and paste it into the newly inserted track, then delete the source track. Problem is, the track name doesn't get pasted when I paste in the clip from the source track. I have to go back to the source track and copy the track name and paste it into the new track. If it was just two or three tracks . . . no problem. I have to move around nearly 40 tracks. Its too time consuming to do it one at a time. I'm new to X1 so maybe I missed something obvious. DID I ???? If there is an EASY WAY to re-arrange tracks on the screen, please let me know. The OTHER ISSUE . . . is the WAV file name. 3 of the total 53 file names contains a "?" character as part of the original file name. It was created on a MAC. When I try to open the project, ERROR dialog box appears and tells me that there is a missing file. When I click on the suggested "similar" file IN my Audio Folder which does not display the "?" character, Sonar asks me if I want to use the file with a different name. I click "yes" for every "missing" track . . . thank god there are only three. The "?" character is an "illegal" character for use in Windows file names. If the new WAV file to be used is REMEMBERED within Sonar . . . no problem, but Sonar does not remember this. So every time I open this project I have to go through the same thing. Pretty annoying. Is there a way around this problem ?? I can't "rename" the WAV file name in my "Audio" folder because Windows does not display the "?" character in the file name cause its an "illegal" character. Any suggestion/solution is greatly appreciated Thanks Ed Thanks Ed

You can also sort tracks. Click the Track view Tracks menu and choose Sort Tracks to open the Sort Tracks dialog box.

And you can create track folders so you can group tracks.

You can also use the track manager to hide tracks. (Press H) Organise by track type or instrument group in different screensets and swap screenset to navigate to an instrument group.

What i would do in your case would be to group select similar tracks, like all your drums, or all your strings by selecting them individually but keeping the ctrl key pressed Now right click any one of them and choose 'Move to Folder' followed by 'New Track Folder' You can rename the folder afterwards. Do this for all tracks which can be logically grouped together

I can't "rename" the WAV file name in my "Audio" folder because Windows does not display the "?" character in the file name cause its an "illegal" character. I think you should still be able to rename the file in Windows by replacing the entire set of characters in the name, but if that doesn't t work for you then try one of these suggestions: - in Windows, copy the WAV file then try to rename the copy - in OSX, copy the WAV file then try to rename the copy before moving it back over to Windows - in SONAR, select one of the WAV files and use the export function and give it any name you want; then select that new WAV file the next time you are prompted for a missing file - in SONAR, select one of the WAv files, solo its track, and then use the "bounce to track" feature to create a new track within SONAR; then delete the old track in preference for the new one - in SONAR, right-click one of the WAV files and elect the "bounce to clip" feature; I believe this will generate a new WAV file for you If you can rename this in Windows or OSX then that would be best, but after that I like my last suggestion in SONAR the best. For the other two suggestions within SONAR take care to ensure that you do not include any FX or sends, etc in your bounce or export of the track. Good luck, HTH

Im with the Track Folders suggestion on this one. Create a folder for each group you want (Drums, strings, guitars, Vox, etc...) You can hold Control down and select every track that will go into the folder you are working on, once all are selected I believe you can right click on one of the selected tracks and you should have an option "Move to Folder". Select the appropriate folder and it will move them all there. This will also group them together in track and console view once the move is done. In track view you will be able to expand/minimize each folder making it a dream when working without a huge confusing mess in front of you You can also Mute and Solo each folder as well - kinda handy at times

Hello, Thank you for your posts. "DRAG the track ICON . . ." I didn't think of doing that. This works for all minor re-arrangement of tracks. Thank you for that tip. "TRACK FOLDER" . . . I'm a Newbie, I didn't even know that such a feature existed. I tried it and it is VERY COOL ! When mixing, you just want related tracks open within easy access. Track Folder feature does just that ! Thank you all so much !! I have to go run some errands for a few hours. When I get back, I'll try the "WAV File Name" isuue. Thanks again. Ed
