No sound after exiting Sonar 8
Hi guys I've been out of the loop with Sonar and sound in general for a while now so please bear with me. Glancing over the forum in the past has helped me along the way, but there is one question I can't seem to find an answer to. In my audio options, I've set the driver to ASIO - so everything is playing and no problems so far. I can hear audio files within Sonar i.e. importing an audio file into a project but the problem is, whenever I exit Sonar, I have no sound on my PC. I cannot hear MP3's or hear video sound, nothing. On restarting the PC, everything is back to normal. Any ideas why this happens? I'm using Sonar 8 Studio, an EMU 0202 and a PCR-800 keyboard - running on Windows 8 64 .

im just taking a guess here but your interface/soundcard doesnt have drivers for windows 8,only went up to windows 7,am i right? and even those drivers were betas. than what are you using for ASIO drivers? Cant be your soundcards ASIO drivers unless they have made windows 8 drivers, which i was under the impression they did not. so if your using something like ASIO4ALL and did not mention that, well it may have helped anyway but like i said im speaking hypotheticaly, thats your problem. asio4all isnt releasing your windows driver, realtek, exc. you need a better soundcard or you can just keep doing what your doing now. you may be able to go to device manager/drivers/sound and choose your soundcard that way rather than having to reboot. ASIO4ALL is basically a bandaid,it has its downsides which obviously you are seeing now. did this happen once you upgraded to windows 8?

Thank you! That's the thing - this issue has been occurring since I ran Sonar on Win 7 and before that XP. I am not using ASIO4ALL and all I did (after the checking here) was set the driver to ASIO under the audio settings, after not hearing MIDI playback. As far as I can see, the drivers are all up to date for my EMU.

Alex,i would check to make sure first you have the correct drivers, for instance the drivers you installed on windows 8,where did you obtain these? because lik i was saying before i couldnt find your drivers on line and anything i read pointed in the direction that windows 7 they made a beta and that was the last driver version released for the EMU 0202. check this as well, look under preferences and where it says playback, exc. is the emu checked off as your main soundcard? check this with audio and midi, make sure both have you emu selected in preferences/properties in sonar. there is a driver conflict happening and we can see if we can narrow it down and find the offender and get you back to enjoy music rather than rebooting. for now instead of re-booting alex, try to just log off instead. log off/log back on windows 8 its almost the same as rebooting minus the power down/up. the next time this happens it also might be worth it to go into your computers properties/device manager and look at the soundcard driver,is there a yellow mark next to it? this shows a driver issue.

You need to check -"Share drivers with other programs" in audio options.

I got the drivers from the disc that came with the 0202 - so you're totally correct in saying they're probably really out of date. Still, why then did this happen on XP as well? Surely they would have been compatible at that point? The EMU is selected as the main sound card and it's selected in preferences/properties in Sonar. There is no yellow mark or anything displayed next to it. I saw these post on the forum posted about two years ago: 1) Personally I hate ASIO, but I have to use it because it's all my sound card supports. WDM means that you can minimize Sonar and and still do something else that makes sound... Media Player, etc. ------------------------------- 2) Actually, it only allows one driver to be in use at one time. If you set your ASIO device's driver as your default driver in Windows, check "Use only default drivers" (I think that's what it says) and then allow Sonar to share drivers then you should be gold. Anything to go on there? @Cactus Music: Thanks, I'll look into that.

You always download drivers from the manufactures web site. That is pointed out here over and over on every thread that someone is having audio interface issues. But I think my solution is all that is required, first try that. On some systems Calkwalk will recommends using WDM mode, there is no difference in quality. Use which ever driver gives you the best stability. ( not MME)
