What do I think I think?

Trent Reznor has announced that he was reviving Nine Inch Nails - with Adrian Belew on the guitar.

As much of a fan of NIN as I am, I was kind of relieved when Reznor announced that he was putting the project to rest for an undetermined duration a couple of years ago, after a series of relatively uninspired (imho) albums.

I can also appreciate Belew, and the one-time collaboration w/ NIN for the downward spiral, but, as a full-time member of NIN, I'm left wondering...

Though, through the years, I've come to realize that a lot of what I dug about Nine Inch Nail was a result of the input of band members like Charlie Clouser and Danny Lohner.

Maybe Belew can bring something interesting to the table...

With Adrian they may need to rename the band Nine Inch Noise!
    (In a good way hopefully.)

I saw Adrian Belew perform at Sweetwater a year or so ago when Parker came out with a new 'fly' model.
He was doing promo work for it.

I walked away from there unsure of what I had just witnessed....

    Dude's kinda' scarry too.

Reznor + Belew sounds sonically  interesting, but a weird combo - Trent is dark and dreary and Adrian is happy go lucky.

I met Adrian at a pre-concert talk many years ago. He told one story that ended with Frank Zappa turning to him and asking, "Can't you ever be serious?".

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

That was slightly more painful than the Bowie collaboration.

I think I threw up in my mouth a little.

I'm not holding my breath but I hope they get back to something "noisier".

There used to be a bunch of guys to handle the various facets of any song - programming drums, creating wicked edits, sampling and all. There was so much attention going to details.

But the last couple of albums sounds like Reznor quickly built his songs around a few bass riffs, ran all of that through Izotope Trash for the mandatory distortion, and called it a day.

NIN aside, Adrian Belew is awesome beyond words. I was just watching this live video of Talking Head's Born Under Punches yesterday and his guitar playing is sublime...

Maybe Trent knew they sucked which is why he gave one away as a free download.  I listened once and haven't touched it since - glad I didn't pay for it!
