Hi Mike, I have to admit I am only familiar with their guitar strings. I've got a few Ric guitars and use the Ric strings on them. best, mike

You guys with your Epiphones are driving me to start looking. I have been wanting a semi-hollow body for a couple of years but have fought off getting one. Please, no more pictures, I'm weak and fragile and my GC card is paid off.

I bought my first set of flat wounds for the Rick bass last night and remembered this thread. Here are my initial observations from a first time flat wounder. I bought Roto Sound 77's, 45-105. The tone from the strings is heavier, has more punch and a more even tone from string to string. The feel of sliding up or down to a note is really nice. They have more tension on them than the round wounds; my hands were not used to this extra tension and got tired more quickly. I am going to have to adjust for intonation if I leave them on. They seem to be sitting up just slightly higher off my fret board than the rounds; not much, but the extra tension must change the neck slightly. I can try lowering the bridge slightly, but it may require a slight neck torque.
Overall, I like the tone a lot. Think McCartney sound here, really nice bass tone. I am just not sure how my hands are going to handle the extra tension; I had some tendinitis issues with heavier guitar strings a few years back. It's not like I gig out every weekend anymore, however. I read up on flats quite a bit last night after I played them for an hour. Most every comment said to give them a little break in time. Sounds like there may be some brands that naturally have lower tension as well.
All of you flat wounders out there, what brand strings are you playing?

FYI - the Roto flats sound very different when new, much livelier than they will be in a little bit.
In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

It will be interesting to hear what they sound like after they get broken in some. I was actually kind of surprised at the lack of over the counter choices on flats up at GC. I don't know why, I just thought I would have had a couple more options; I think there was one other brand. TI's seem to be highly recommended on forums.....yikes...,$75 a set.

When I was living in Germany and we needed strings, there was this little shop next to the PX that sold musical supplies. We'd just ask for strings and we'd be handed a package of Black Diamond flat wounds. What did I know? I never saw a set of round wounds until we got back to the states.

I know I'm necro-posting here but I agree with the premise of the OP. Flat-wounds on a P-Bass, nothing better.

mike_mccue I have flat wounds on everything but the acoustics.
Even the dulcimer? Or is the dulcimer an acoustic? I don't know since I don't see a picture of one in DimPro.

Naw, it's MakeShift that did the necro-posting. You just jumped on the gravy train.

Not sure what I did, but it was probably me. :-). I'm just trying to catch up to Bapu's post count.....only 45,000 more to go.
This morning I lowered my 4003 bridge a little and now the neck is pretty close at the 9th fret. If it needed a truss rod adjustment, it would be ever so slight. Funny, the intonation is now really close as well.....and the tension on the strings has lowered. Little adjustments can mean a lot sometimes. I seem to have misplaced my little Philips head screw driver. I guess I will pick one up today and fine tune the intonation later.

Hi, Looking for a sound or two ... and maybe someone can give me a hint here on how to get it, and if strings are the issue or not. Guru Guru - Dance of the Flames - The Girl from Hirschhorn Caravan - For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night - Memory Lane, Hugh and Headloss I know that the bass player in Caravan had a Gibson EB-0 (the original) ... but I think the one on the Guru Guru album is a Fender Jazz bass. Anyone can give me an idea if possible?
