Transpose Problem
Hi Everyone, I am involved in a vocal harmony project and sometimes, to expedite matters, I just send everyone their vocal parts individually to learn. The female parts are too high for me so I have been using the "transpose audio" feature to buy myself of whole step or so. However, it's functionality is very erratic. (I am using Process>Transpose>MPEX Solo Instrument Single Voice / Transpose Audio. About 25% of the time it works. The rest of the time, the bar graphic shoots over very rapidy and nothing changes pitch-wise. In fact, the "Undo" and "History" menus don't even show it as an event. A couple of seconds later I get a message that says "Could not save complete recording. Audio disk may be full" and nothing will make the transposition happen after that. I assume I'm doing something wrong but as I follow the same procedure every time, I cannot understand why it succeeds sometimes and not others. I really need this tool and any help would be much appreciated. In fact, if there are any other superior ways to transpose a vocal, I'd love to learn. This does not have to be performance quality and a little "chipmunk" is OK. It's only for people to learn their parts. The quality isn't hugely important as long as it's listenable. Thanks, everyone.

I've done this a lot with Audacity (free) to bring a pop song into my vocal range
You just tell it the source and destination keys and it transposes the wav file in a few seconds.
Sound isn't great, but it's ok for practicing.

Hallo. I'm not sure what's going on here. If I select a clip or track, and use process>transpose, it opens a window. You can choose various "type"s - radius vocal etc, but I don't see MPEX. Is "Transpose Audio" ticked each time? I tried it a few times up a tone with the settings I had, and it sounded "chipmunk", but it worked. Am I missing something. What version of Sonar are you running? VVocal may be an alternative, but Process>transpose should work for what you want.

Hi jb101 Yes, it opens a window but one of the options in the drop down menu is "MPEX Solo Instrument, Single Voice" and yes, Transpose Audio is always checked. I'm using Producer X2, 32 bit on Windows 7. The other transpose options are mostly described as "radius" options. As I say, it works two or three times and then completely shuts me down. Paul P - I tried downloading the program but as yet, SONAR isn't communicating with it. I really need to have a process inside SONAR to get what I want done. Does this program work inside SONAR or is it external?

mpex isn't part of recent versions of sonar afaik, it's from previous versions. the radius options are the newest. on a different note, i can get transpose to work, but formant scaling is always grayed out. that the same for everybody?

MPEX is still part of SONAR (32bit only) From the SONAR documentation The following features are not supported in SONAR x64 at this time:... MPEX time/pitch stretching. A 64-bit library is not available for the MPEX time/pitch stretching algorithm, so this feature is not supported in SONAR x64. Use iZotope Radius or SONAR's internal time/pitch stretching instead.

@nick123 - What version of Sonar are you using? Post your specs in your sig. @swamptooth - formant scaling is greyed out here too. I'm off to bed now, but I will pop back tomorrow.

looks like mpex may be part of cubase as well, if you have it installed... just from a random search on the web.

Funny that neither help nor the manual have anything to say about the Type field in the Process->Transpose dialog box.
nickl23 - Audacity is a stand-alone mini-daw but the Sonar function is more or less identical, maybe better with the different types, so I'd forget about it.

Thanks every one for your input. After checking the FAQs I found a few people who had posted the same problem and the general consensus of opinion is that the track that won't work has some kind of artifacts in it like Groove Clips or something. I don't know why this would be the case when I inserted two brand new audio tracks and one of them works and the other doesn't. But when I take the one that doesn't and "Bounce to Track", the Transpose function then works perfectly. I have no explanation for that but, since it now workls, I don't really need one. Thanks again.
