New Song: Killing Time on Broadway

Here's a song I just finished using Sonar X2 Producer. Once again, I recorded drums live in my basement studio using a 2 mic set up. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. http://marwoodwilliams.ba...lling-time-on-broadway

This is an interesting hybrid of On Broadway and some beat poetry.  It’s very raw sounding to me ears as far as the actual instruments and the vocals go. The mix is kind of wacky as well - it sounds very thin in my phones and a bit off balance (the congas/bongos came in and sounded so “out of the mix” that I thought maybe I was playing them).  But I mean all this in a nice way - I have no mixing skills so I can’t even suggest a different approach (and you may not want one).

For me this was about the lyrics and attitude  - and I think they’re both pretty good - again, sort of like  Lou Reed meets Ray Davies at a poetry slam .  I like it.

Conceptually it seems close to the original "On Broadway" so that gets in the way for me. The repeat of the actual song within it emphasizes that.
    As for mixing?
Except for the voice which is nice and clear, the parts come across as very thin, separated and inconsistent in tempo and volume. And that feels like they don't support the vocal.
Perhaps some Audiosnap work and compression?
We all fall in love with our mix and it's hard to get new perspectives.
The old advice of comparing your mix with a similar commercial cut might point you in some new directions?
Keep it up. It's worth it.

PS I'm no expert so take that into consideration.

I like it, very loose and organic sounding. Sounds like a live performance, and that suits the song. Mix wise I think the vocal and the bass are it's strong points.

Like the feel and overall song, the mix does sound very thin here and as noted a little out of balance.

Thanks for the comments! The drums were recorded live and the main thing I was going for was "feel". My goal for this song was to capture a live vibe "loose and organic" as Sharke noted. - I wouldn't consider using Audio Snap in this situation.

Like your idea.  The mix is not using all the frequency spectrum.  It could use lows and mid-lows.  I agree with an earlier comment to compare to some other tunes to see how it feels side by side.  I like your arrangement.

It reminds me of something Smashmouth would do. I like the song but as already said, it needs mix work. I know you played the drums and musicly they sound really good. In the mix though, it needs more work. Of course if you lack microphones, it's a harder job. You'll need to experiment with mic placement.

    Well done!!!

I like this. A lot. I like the lowfi sound to it, I like the flow of the vocals. This is a really cool song, and I mean cool as in cool cat. I would not change a thing. I was going to download it and stick it on my iPod, but I do not want to send any email addresses or automatically subscribe to any mailing lists.

+1 on this.  The song is very tasty and clever, but I'm not as keen on the lo-fi mix as Shad, though it's just a matter of taste.  This has great potential.

I'm another vote for liking the radio/low-fi sound of the mix.  The drums sit and sound great for the two mic set up.  This had a Shawn Mullins vibe to my ears . . . I really enjoyed this.

    Hi Marwood,

Cool tune. I like your lo-fi approach, although I don't think more lows/mid-lows would hurt.

Didn't you post some music a year or so ago? I seem to remember that two-mic drum method from somewhere

Anyway, I liked this a lot.
