How DO you delete a section across ALL tracks?
I'm trying to delete two measures from the middle of a song using "Delete Special \ Delete Hole" but it operates inconsistently across the tracks. Some clips shift over correctly by two measures whereas others stay put and ignore the request entirely. Here are my steps: - Select all (CTRL-A) - Split at the start of the selection - Select all (CTRL-A) - Split at the end of the selection - Select all (CTRL-A) - Select the range on the timeline (while making sure that all the clips/tracks are still selected) - Delete Special \ Delete Hole I have tried doing this with and without the additional steps to split before deleting. I always make sure that ALL the tracks are selected (and therefore all the clips that fall within the range are selected). Frankly, this has never worked for me consistently (in X1/2 as well as before) UNLESS all the tracks have similar length clips that start and end at the same time. Often as a workaround I will create "dummy clips" that I put in to each track to force that behaviour, but it's a lot of extra work for what should be a straightforward function. For people with a similar scenario, do you also experience this issue? If not then what do you differently? I feel like I have exhausted all the possibilities on this. FWIW, in Vegas Video this is referred to as "ripple edit" which just works without any messing around. This is the function I am looking for...

Just write a little event somewhere in the 'hole'. It will then delete without any issues. This 'bug' has annoyed me for years and years!

I used to hold down the alt key, start at the top left, click and drag down to the bottom right. I don't think you need to hold the alt key if you use the Smart Tool, then hit delete or click on Edit-Cut.

Thanks, I've tried some of those workarounds in the past with varying degrees of success. However, I just tried copying a clip to each and every single track that exactly matches the time range I am trying to delete, and it helped some other tracks but not all. I don't feel like fighting with it this time. This is a basic feature. Basic. It should work and it's gotten worse.

I do the split-split select delete thing to delete all the clips in that 2 measures..... then I simply set the snap to grid to MEASURE and select the tracks and drag them. Snap to puts them exactly where they need to be. I normally work with projects of 8 to 16 tracks so it's not much of a problem if I need to do it manually.

Thanks again, but the trouble is that after the deletion range I have tempo changes and time sig changes, so it's not feasible to slide the material over manually. I just tried a whole bunch of other things (like adding clips to each track that match the time range or exceed the time range on one end, then the other, then both ends). But none of these workarounds is working. Literally stuck.

The method I use is Ctrl + A Sweep the time range in the time ruler Select Edit--->Delete Special Check all including "Delete Hole" No need to split etc. Does that not work for you?

Sadly no, it doesn't. I only add the split steps in there because that workaround used to help with much older versions of Cakewalk/Sonar (as did putting dummy clips into the hole-to-be-deleted to trick the software into treating all tracks equally and consistently).

So I found a workaround, which is not really an acceptable solution but I need to move on past this issue. I never like to let these things get the better of me. Here's what I did: - add a dummy clip to the start of EVERY track - add a dummy clip to the end of every track too - Select ALL clips, right-click and "Bounce clips" - Now all my clips are exactly the same length - Insert a redundant tempo change and time sig change before and after the deletion range - Select all tracks and select the deletion range - Delete Special \ Delete Hole (with everything checkmarked) This works, and it successfully removes the timerange from all tracks consistently, as well as shuffle the tempo changes with those clips (this last part would not work without inserting those redundant tempo and time sig changes). The caveat is that I have lost my individual clips and some automation etc., but at the end of the day I can move on. I do feel that this feature should be a two-step process: "select range" and then "remove range completely".

I do feel that this feature should be a two-step process: "select range" and then "remove range completely". great idea peter, copy/pasted this in my important sonar notes. thanks You're welcome. One thing I've learned to do with my projects is periodically "bounce" down clips and reduce the inherent complexity therein. Basically creating a "milestone version" that helps in getting rid of multiple clips and any clip gain automation as well as audio snap transients and multiple track lanes, etc, etc. I find a few benefits occur from this: the project file becomes MUCH smaller, and consequently loads very quickly; the track view becomes easier to manage and it's also easier to perform editing functions such as "delete hole" which were failing for me before. The other major benefit is that your WAV files can be easily imported into a new project (or even a new software sequencer!) should your old project file become corrupt or you just want to use a different sequencer. I still wish "delete hole" worked without having to combine clips, and that it was a simple two-step process (select timeline, and then remove from project) but alas we have to do whatever we have to do in order to move on.

You're lucky you can even check the "delete hole" check box. Sometimes that option is greyed out for me even though I have a chunk of project selected that spans all tracks.

This is a new project started in X2. That being said, I have done a fair amount of editing with split clips, copied clips and so on. Nothing too major, but I have found with previous versions of Sonar (and probably dating back to when it was called Cakewalk Pro Audio too) that the "delete hole" function can be unwieldy or even erratic. I'm currently in "composition mode" where I am throwing a few ideas about within a project, and there are things I love about Sonar that allow me to mess with arrangements, but alas "delete hole" is not one of them. It will work with the project up to a point, but I find that after a certain amount of editing the "delete hole" function is not able to do what it says accurately.

I've noticed that too. It's very picky about what you have already selected and one gray area is including tracks that are empty, or have no clips within the range you are attempting to delete, or if you don't select all tracks, or whatever. If project content is relatively straightforward (i.e. all the clips are the same length, or there are minimal number of clips that have been edited or copied or stretched) then it all works fine. That's why I sometimes resort to just bouncing down all the clips periodically so that I can get past the roadblock. But sometimes I don't want to lose those individual clips, especially when I'm working on arranging a new song.

It should really be a simple two-step process: (1) select range (2) delete hole across all tracks You shouldn't even need to select the tracks or anything else. To me, the idea of selecting which tracks you want to apply the "delete hole" function to is an edge case. I am much more likely to want the "delete hole" function to work at the song level, so I shouldn't have to be selecting all the tracks. It's an unnecessary step that I'm willing to bet complicates the code behind it all.
