Problem getting SONAR X1 to work with keyboard

I have a keyboard that is kinda old but can support MIDI. I plug it in to my computer via MIDI to USB cable. I open SONAR, make it recognize the device and restart the computer, and it doesn't work, I can't work with any MIDI instrument. My sound card is an ASUS Xonar DG. I though I could use it for Audio production in addition to gaming. Is it my keyboard or is it my sound card that is posing the problem?

Why do you restart your computer after opening sonar ?

You say sonar recognizes your keyboard and you can select it in the Preferences dialog ? That's a start.

Now, do you see your soundcard in the Preferences>Audio>Devices>Output drivers ? What does it say ?

first of all you need to make sure you have the driver for the keyboard your using unless its plug and play comp.
next just simply plug the keyboard in to your soundcard and start sonar.
    go to preferences./midi/playback and devices.

you should see your keyboard in there, make sure you put a check next to it.
    hit apply/close.

    insert a soft synth.
go to the track your synth is in and select the input, click the dropdown box and select your keyboard under input.
your output should be the synth.
Make sure input echo IS ON . that's important.
