To make kick drum tracks stand out, I like to use a Pultec-style EQ and do the low-end boost+cut "trick".
Set the Pultec's Boost to around 3 or 4 & set the Atten to around the same value.
I typically set the Low Freq to 60.
As I understand how Pultec EQs work on those 3 low-end knobs, is the Boost is a wide boost (lower Q value) and the Atten is more narrow (higher Q value), so you end up with a "wavy" boost/cut/boost around that low freq.
Boost/Atten settings between 3 & 4 work real nice to bring out a good thumpy definition as opposed to just turning up the kick to make it louder.
If you want to get fancy schmancy, I got a nice full kick sound doing this:
Bounce the MIDI kick track twice:
- one with a 22" kick with a felt beater.
- one using a 24" kick with a plastic beater.
Do the Pultec thing above on each track, but set the Low Freq to 60 hz on the 22"/felt and set the LF to 30hz on the 24"/plastic track. Blend track volumes to taste.
Mess with the Boost & Atten values to go from subtle to drastic.
I use Overtone's PTC-2A.
