Anyone using Skype? If so, have a couple of questions
I'm going to be working with another guitarist in the near future. We will be using Skype as a means for communication. I'd like the audio being transmitted to be as good as possible. I was thinking about using my Roland Octa Capture for 1) capturing my guitar signal and 2) setting up a microphone. Is this possible? Can I use my octa capture and have it send it's signal to my sound card? And if so, I'm wondering about how well this would work with Skype... Will it choke Skype and make it stutter a lot? If you've done something like this, did you find a common ground between audio bit depth and video resolution? Sorry if these seem like "duh" questions, but I've never used Skype.

Personally I've never had that good of an experience with Skype. Not in terms of actual sound quality during a conversation, because that's pretty good (in comparison with phone quality). But I have experienced drop outs, echo, and sometimes the other person's voice will cut out when I'm talking and vice versa. It's a little annoying. As for your interface, simply go into Windows sound options and make it the default. You should do that anyway. And in the same options, make the interface the device used for microphone input. You may have to adjust your settings in Skype as well, can't remember.

Haven't used it in the last year and a half or so, but my experience was similar to Sharke's - drop outs, lagging and such.

I swear, when it first came out, the sound was perfect. I guess like everything else that was just a honeymoon period...

You could also try Ohm Studio, which is still in beta and is free, but I think it's going to end up as around $10/month or so.... http://www.ohmstudio.com/

It seems to me that to use Skype these days you need a bastard of a router if you are using wireless connection and also a really good DSL line both in and out. I suppose the average speed isn't quite adequate. We often use Skype with clients in other countries and that works well. But we're on a really good line. It's not how it used to be...

If you have a standard broadband connection, that is technically way more than enough to transmit and receive voice calls. Think about it, provided the source is good, most of us can easily stream 1080p with high definition audio AND video. The trouble is that whatever network Skype uses has gotten overcrowded, and call quality suffers. I have a friend back in England who has one of those super-super fast connections and he says Skype is just as crappy for him as it is for everyone else. Well it's not that bad, you can still have a decent conversation. It just has annoying dropouts, echo and other problems.

Nor did it indicate that anything was recording. once I stopped recording though, it went through some process where it showed the waves... But, like I said, I couldn't get any playback... Could be me, I dunno...
