Just moved up to X2 Prod. from Sonar 5. How in the freaking world...
...do I get the effects bin back onto the track view? Or the pan control for that matter? I swear I'm just not seeing it yet. I can turn it on in the console view, but not on the tracks, where I like it. Bit of a learning curve going up 5 or 6 versions. Ugh. Help please! Thanks!

The Learning curve with X2 is ALMOST as steep as it was with X1... just in different ways. I suggest waiting a while until Scott Garrigus releases the "X2 Power!" book - it will be well worth the extra investment. Just remember... there are NO stupid questions... only stupid answers (and you won't find many of those around here).

Glyn Barnes I recommend the "SWA Complete Sonar X2" video, its a big help finding your way around the new interface and features. Thanks for the recommendation. The disappearing now time is probably because you have "Left click locks scroll" checked in the Track View menu---->Options--->Click Behaviour. If you set that selecting something such as a clip in the TV will automatically lock scrolling. Right click toward the top of the time ruler to start scrolling again. The other possibility is that you have pressed the scroll lock key on your keyboard.

I've had the missing Now Time Marker. I was told to try right clicking in the Now Time. Haven't had one disappear this week so I cant say if it works yet. Mike EDIT: I see Karl addressed this already. Sorry I'm still working on my first cup of coffee.

You guys rock! Appreciate the help and comments. You know, its not really so different as to be impossible. I'm on my second all nighter with X2 coming from a LOT of hours behind Sonar 5 and aside from a few head scratchers that I made through and a few frustrations, I did ok. Even wrote and tracked about half a song after I posted this question, and got some hands on with Session Drummer for it. Wish I had I way to post a video for you guys, this thing is a ROCKER! ;) I am loving my 23 inch touch screen though. That's also coming from a 15 inch crappy resolution screen all these years. This is great! Wndows 8 is a MUCH bigger learning curve than X2 so far.

I second Karl's vids, and definitely Scott's book. I moved from Sonar 6 to X1, and X1 Power was a godsend. I also recommend Eli's Groove 3 X2 videos. I have them and they're very good. Good luck and have fun. When you get the hang of X2 the workflow is so much better. I love it. Post any questions you have as there are many very knowledgeable, and helpful people on here.

Sonar 5 to Sonar X2 is like moving to a diffenert DAW all together. It's quite the learning curve but i.mo. well worth the effort. We all know how frustrating the switch can be. Glad it's working out for ya! Rocky

Well, if you want real estate, it's hard to beat Dell's 30" monitorIt goes on sale several times a year for 400$ less. All I can say is that at 2560x1600 Sonar is beautiful.

I came from Sonar 5.2 to X1 and now X2 so I feel your pain. As already been suggested start slow and give yourself time to learn. I also suggest Sonar X2 Power. I consider Scott’s as part of the upgrading costs. Good luck.

One of the things I'm liking, and not liking at the same time (and it took me a but to figure this out too) is how you don't have to open two tracks to run say, Session Drummer. You used to have to open it in an audio track as an effect, and then point your midi track at it. Now you apparently just open them in that synth rack thing. The thing I do and don't like is, while its cool that it shows the name of what that midi note is (kick drum, snare etc) its 1) hard to see the print and 2) I can't look at it to see where it is on an actual keyboard unless I can switch it to typical piano view somewhere. It's very likely I can but I haven't managed it just yet. I'm starting to like it, but it is a little strange. Messing with midi notes is different too. Need to figure out the draw tool and the select tool etc. right clicking to delete, is that new? Seems like it is. Double clicking to print a note, not sure I like that yet. I'd rather single click. Windows 8 is still ****ed though. Lets turn it ALL upside down why don't we?

Considering how fast I could just blast through the early versions (people working behind me often commented on how smooth I was and I often even impressed myself with it lol) now I'm like a newbie almost, trying to find things. Glad I don't have sessions with other musicians for a bit. I need to set my quick keys back up too. I usually have a key that saves, deletes, adds a pre made audio track and one for a midi track, all along my F keys. Those make life nice. I'd also like a backlit wireless keyboard. I can't see this one for anything after looking down from a bright monitor in the dark.

Demoking Windows 8 is still ****ed though. Lets turn it ALL upside down why don't we? While there is a lot value in the argument that one should persevere with the Win 8 interface and learn it. It was my original intention, however after frustration with Win 8 on another machine when I got my new DAW I installed Classic Shell which turns things back up the way they used to be.

You used to have to open it in an audio track as an effect, and then point your midi track at it. Now you apparently just open them in that synth rack thing. I think you may be referring to simple instrument tracks. They came in back in 7 IIRC or does 5 have them? I can't remember. They aren't compulsory though you can still set up a separate MIDI and audio track. That's my preferred MO as well. The PRV is still there but opens by default in the multidock which is one of the great additions IMHO. Again the PRV can be floated in the old way if required. I'm starting to like it, but it is a little strange. Messing with midi notes is different too. Need to figure out the draw tool and the select tool etc. right clicking to delete, is that new? Seems like it is. Double clicking to print a note, not sure I like that yet. I'd rather single click. Double clicking to draw a note is for a preset length note. You can still left click and drag to draw a note to the length you want. Make sure Snap intensity isn't at maximum though or the draw function will be constrained to the snap setting only giving the impression the drag to length draw function isn't working. Windows 8 is still ****ed though. Lets turn it ALL upside down why don't we? Windows 8... er yes.

The "Simple Instrument Track", that's been around for a while, version 8.5 I think? I don't care for it myself and still use the two track method. You will find a lot od debate about the subject. With something like Session Drummer 3 you will eventually want to set up multiple outs so you can mix and process each drum differently. This will result in several audio tracks and on midi track. You will see this option in the Insert Soft Synth options "All Synth Audio Outputs"

OlSkoolGuy Just remember... there are NO stupid questions... only stupid answers I have to respectfully disagree with this assertion. Case in point: Once I was in an elevator with a guy dressed in a baseball uniform. He was holding a long box that said "Louisville Slugger." In a lame attempt to start a conversation, I asked, "Is that a bat?" =D

Hi. I posted this as a separate thread, but since I'm new to X2 from 8.5.3 I thought I'd copy it here: "So this is probably a dumb question but I am new to SONAR X2 Producer coming from 8.5.3. Why, when using folders, is the input echo button half-lit after recording a MIDI track? The mouse-over says it's "on" but it also says that when fully lit. I can't seem to find a reason for the half-lit condition. All info appreciated."

Got my answer from my new thread. The half-lit button means only some of the tracks in the folder are echoed. Thanks to all who replied - it really helped me out!
