I am sure that somewhere in the vast array of tools and plugs we can do this in the box right? any ideas?

    Hi Chuck,

There are various ways to do a drop off and it can be done with various instruments either in the studio or live.

I always believe getting the actual source (sound/technique) right would be ideal though I'm not entirely/exactly sure what type of Bass Drop you want so I'm going to throw a few ideas out there for you ;)

I think it's also a matter of a performance technique to begin with and arranged where it fits; to pause.  This will make the Bass Drop stand out way much better.

Can get that effect 'LIVE' on a guitar to bend the pitch down (trem arm or heal rest). But doing this on bass won't be so easy, doing on drums 'LIVE' would require a sample trigger 'pad' (electronic kit pad) loaded with the right sound that includes the drop off. Or unless the real skins and shells are incredibly flexible enough but I doubt a traditional drum kit will cut it LOL!!

For in the studio; Start with a short sample and add pitch-bend (down) at the tail end using a pitch controller.

If it's a real bass, drop a snippet (short segment) into a sampler and then you can control the technique from there. Otherwise, a really good pitch-tool and automation to control the drop off.

    Try Melodyne Editor or V.
Vocal pitch-curve, curving the pitch down, way down for the tail end, it might work? though how well I'm not sure?.

I prefer the, get it done at the source, that way it can be performed 'LIVE'!  The easiest way is to assign the sample to a trigger pad.

Anyway, it wouldn't hurt experimenting. Good luck!

What is a "bass drop effect"?

I'm guessing, but I presume he means that he wants the frequency of a note to drop in pitch by a large amount.

I suggest using Dimension Pro's pitch envelope filter, which has a range of 2 octaves.  Better still, Rapture has an 8-octave range.

Oh, I see, Kev. Makes sense.

Yeah, I love the fact that the pitch bend on the Arturia CS-80V will take the frequency right down to 0 Hz, so I see the attraction.

    So.... try this>>>>   http://illformed.org/plugins/glitch/

I think it's still free and can do the slide down you are needing.  like a record stopping in the middle of the song.

Chuck, it's easy as heck in Sonar. The biggest problem is the drop pitch sound. Sonar has nothing that does this correctly. I had to use Waves Sound Shifter or a plug called Elastique to get the drop to happen.

The loops and stuff in Sonar which are supplied via install are beautiful because most bass drops are made using 808 kicks. I took an 808 here, lengthened it and then put the pitch drop on. From there, compressed it with the 4k bus comp, added a little 35 Hz, and this is what I have.

Easy to do....but without a proper pitch unit to do the drop, pretty hard in Sonar.

    Chuck
I know that we all like to do our own production on things.

However I would try two idea's.
    1. I would google it and see if I could find a free downloadable wav......there are tons of them but just be careful of where you download it.
    2. see if someone here could do one for you.

synths like NI Massive already have 808 drops already done. I have not looked but maybe Z3ta+2 might have one....(I will have to look for you tonite when I get home.)

or maybe Dimpro with the Emu expansion pack I think has one I could look there for you as well....

i am sure that I have at least ONE in my collection some where....

I will look for you tonite and let you know.

Okay, I read the original question completely differently.

In dance music a "bass drop" is a compositional element, a way of shaping a note
    There's a short example here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEn_ejTJCj4

In Cakewalk I'd do the bass drop in the synth: assign an LFO and produce an envelope similar to the one in the example.
So this would be specific to the synth used, not so plug-in processing.

    > "Bass drop" is also used to talk about another compositional idea, suddenly introducing a band of really low freq's to a mix.
An example using audio samples is shown here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEssFB7nnoM

Again, this is about choosing samples and placing them, not so much anything specific to the DAW.
