X2b Status
I've said several times before that I don't want to see X2b until Cakewalk has really dug in and looked at many of the complaints/issues on this forum, especially Take Lanes and Crashes. However, I am curious as to whether X2b work is in progress, and although we know Cakewalk does peruse the forums at times, I'm wondering just how much weight the forum users hold toward considerations of the next release/patch, or if we'd be better off going to meet Cakewalk at trade shows to explain our needs/wants, or through other means. Do we get much of a voice, or is there another audience that is louder? I know there's some historical evidence of what I'm regarding, but after some recent changes at Cakewalk (employment), and the current priorities, this question is aimed dead at Cakewalk. I'd love to at least see a status or some indication that the next version is one the way, but to what extent will it address. Thanks in advance!

They are working on the next product, whethere it is X2b or X3. Usually, some things get fixed, new stuff is introduced and something breaks. The way of software. Cake does watch these forums - the CTO was just on a thread. They won't tell you what is next until it is almost ready. We've had a week or two heads up about certain functions and then, boom, they release a fix or paid upgrade. But not always. There is usually a larger lead time before a major upgrade with a few hints about what is happening, but it is mostly marketing stuff (which I love, but usually isn't enough). hope this helps. @

I jolly well hope they're working on automation as well, particularly the ability to custom label automation lanes (or at least label them correctly). Currently, if you're automating an effect in an FX chain, Sonar doesn't even label the lane with the name of the effect you're automating. Major hassle.

It is certainly an exercise in patience. We're all aching for the next release or update, and I certainly hope X2 isn't simply abandoned for X3, until some of its own kinks etc are worked out. Surely they don't want X2 to be a black-eye release. X1d still has some issues, but you can't argue that at least it was worked on to that degree and relatively stable as a result.

I feel Lanes can fairly easily be improved without too much recoding. Colors and buttons are key here. I really like the idea of labeling each Automation envelope. That's a pretty neat idea.

That's a pretty neat idea. I myself would like to think like this as well but with coding, we know very little of what is really going on because once you re-code one thing, 50 other things are changed. and then those 50 commands need re-coding, and the chain just continues. lets hope for the best on that one though :)

Just hard to determine if what problems are legit or not. So many combinations of hardware/software that it is just mind-numbing. It is mind-numbing. I suggested Cakewalk list out hardware specs that were used/tested in their lab so that you can decide to follow suit or make changes there. Assuming you bought the exact same hardware they qualified in test, then it's fairly safe to say you should expect no issues. HOWEVER, if you DO have issues with hardware/updates as tested, you could gain a better feedback channel to Cakewalk developers. This would remove much of the variables in your configuration. Realizing this is a picking Winners/Losers scenario, which is largely unfair to many hardware makers, these same hardware makers "could" in theory test their units with Sonar (and other DAW's) and provide a list of winners and losers as well. Make it like a consortium, where software meets OS, meets hardware.

Being a software engineer for a software product and a consumer of software products, I can see this from both sides. Sometimes you have to release software (and its new features) earlier than what you like in order to meet time to market demands. Given this competitive reality, you must release software with some known bugs and some unknown bugs (that your testing in the lab has not yet revealed). The goal is to introduce new features/functions, improve performance and minimize both known and unknown bugs. All the while, not creating new bugs. And meeting the release schedules on time. It is challenging to say the least - balancing these tradeoffs. Good software companies balances these tradeoffs qualitatively and quantitatively. Now on other side of coin, as a consumer, I would prefer new features that are great, great performance and bug free. Knowing that is not possible, I still set the bar high. I think Cakewalk, from my perspective has done a good job and managing the complexity releasing software, including not setting expectation of what will or will not be in a release too early - which always puts engineering into a difficult "box". And my last point, with "software-only" applications (not turn-key), the software vendor has no control over the OS environment the software will be running in out in the "field". I can tell you, in the software product I work on, 90% is problem/issue reports, once investigated turn out to be a Windows OS environmental problem - not the vendor software. The best a software vendor can do is provide good documentation as to what the OS system / interface requirements are and explain implications of not having a solid platform on which your running the software. Still, you have many customers that either don't or can't build and tune up an appropriate platform for the softwares "intended use". And sometimes, these customers falsely blame the actually software, when in fact it is their platform that is messed up. It drives up crazy, but we know this is not much we can do about it - out of our "control boundaries" Sorry for long message....And I know "track lanes" is not a good example. That feature should probably have never been released to the field. Peace Out, Dan

last month I was able to get X2a running very well on my machine. Still a few bugs but I can live with / work around them for now. I have an off the shelf HP machine i ordered from HP, yes I had them add a hard drive and upgrade the RAM and Video card, but nothing exotic or expensive. Update your windows, optimize the machine, install the X2a patch, make sure you have the latest device drivers. I had tons of issues, crashes etc before i did these things, now, I rarely have an issue, and if I do experience an issue, its a bug. A reboot and I am good to go for another many sessions before i have an issue again. The most common bugs I see are: 1) my interface drives sometimes get "lost" after I change the buffer size. Doesn't happen every time, just sometimes. 2) sometimes sonar does not "unload" completely before I shut the machine off, when this happens, the next time I boot, the drivers get hosed, need to reboot and all is good 3) if I have multiple takes and I freeze that channel while a few of the takes are muted, upon thawing that channel, they are no longer muted. very annoying, so I right click and mute on the clips, rather than the take lane. 4) pre -X2 projects with soft synths seem to be a bit tempermantal. So I copy the midi data to another track, remove and reload the soft synth, move the midi data back and I'm good to go again. 5) IMO, i don't like the take lanes as they are. takes up too much screen real estate, limited vertical zoom, sometimes if a take lane in the middle is deleted, the screen doesn't refresh, its def gone, but there is a big gap where it was, the other lanes don't collapse back together. I hope they improve them, if they can't, I would thrilled if they went away. Wish list: I wish I could create my own custom toolbar / control bar, not code anthing, just have a toolbar that I can select what tools I want on it so I could add a SAVE button!!! I know there is a keyboard shortcut and autosave, but I would really like a button!!
