Waiting til May

Hi Everyone,

I wrote this song a few years back, and got round to recording it over the autumn-winter.

I've been recording in my spare time for about 3 years now and this is the first project that I'm sort of happy with :)

https://soundcloud.com/ed...s/waiting-til-may#play

Thank you in advance for taking the time to listen to it, and for any advice you can offer me for future projects.

Ed.

    Absolutely brilliant.

One of the best produced tracks i've ever heard on this forum, and that's saying something.

Excellent in every department. Could'nt fault it.

    Great work. Well done Ed.

This is a superb song.  It sounds polished as is, and I'm impressed with your skills.  Don't spend all your time with economics.

Outstanding performance. Outstanding composition, and arrangement. I find the mix a bit bass heavy here (though it is pretty clear) and the crash cymbals sound a bit hot at times.

Really good song man! i also listened to your other song and liked it too. I have to agree with foxwolfen on the mix. It could be cleared up some more with an EQ here and there but im trying to get better at mixing so thats just my opinion. Great job!

You can try a little EQ to tame the brilliance a bit. You could also use a modelled tape effect to warm it up a bit.

I like your song, but Shad is right about that bass, is there a high pass filter on it? And is it a bass or a VSTi? In either case, you should use a High Pass Filter (HPF) on the bass and the kick. You'll have to play with the HZ and Q, but it should pass down sharply (IMO) below 50 hz or so? So if it starts a little higher can have a more gentle slope.

Again, likewise on the kick, then you can use a sharp Q on a bell filter and look for the best frequencies that Accenture the bass? And cut them from the kick, likewise, find what the kick likes, and cut it from the bass (a sharp Q with anywhere from 4 to 6 db cut.

This should help, I can't tell if there are any other instruments competing in those frequencies? i.e., synths? low strings? I'm not sure how things are panned here either? Any acoustic guitar should have the aforementioned HPF on it? The guitar doesn't do a lot down in this range. Also, the bass and kick (typically down the middle) so if you have an instrument, like a guitar? That has low frequencies? You'll want to have it panned, and you can high pass acoustic guitars pretty agressivly and be OK.

I think there a low tom down there fighting it out with the bass too? Those toms should be panned and EQ'ed to avoid the conflict.  I do like the song, I listened several times to dbl chk what I was hearing, but with some simple mix tricks, I think it could really be improved.  **DISCLAIMER** However, please keep in mind that anything I say may be wrong! Different people hear things differently and often you will get conflicting opinions on how to improve things. To me, if the mix is tits (totally in tight sync) I'll say so? But if I'm hearing things I think may could help? I'll mention that too.

I really like Voxengo's LF Max Punch on the bass too (it's a saturation plug)

Great writing. Lyrics are super - poetic storytelling with an unusual musical backdrop. I love the instrumentation -  the use of  what sounds like a bouzouki (to me) is such an integral part of this. Vocal is really good as well. It’s just a really nice piece of music all around - terrific stuff - you’ve got the gift.

Thanks MannyNY - 10 points for correctly guessing the bouzouki :P

The idea behind using the bouzouki was that it would give the track a point of differentiation and make it stand out. Its received mixed response with some people saying it would have sounded better with strings instead - I think they may be right but since I have a bouzouki to hand, it feels like a waste not to use it ever :)

I don't know about 'the gift', but I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Your Greek roots are showing!  However, those are blended so well into a really good song that I looked forward to those parts.  Mix worked for me and I loved the performances.  Your vocal is very unique and awesome!
