Willy Jones... Seth Kellogg

Isn't there some way that you can block the domain of these kitchen spammers? Maybe you could give someone here limited admin privilege so that they could delete this spam as it appears... just saying.

Thanks,

Do I wonder why his name is still listed as the admin here? Alas... no.

I guess they just haven't gotten around to fixing the users forum yet. I guess it isn't important, I we aren't important. Heck, I knew I wasn't important but I thought some of you were.

This option was discussed some time back but the bakers thought better of relinquishing their awesome power to mere mortals such as the likes of us.... even to the more respected long time members here.

Well, someone needs to do something about the kitchen spam. It seems like there should be something that they or someone could do. Maybe we could have a spam the spammer day where everyone here could take the time to flood one of the "kitchen stores" with online messages and as many who are in Britain who are able could call them repeatedly. I wonder if they would accept a collect call from the USA. I guess they would at least have to answer the phone to refuse the call... I really don't know how to fight this but it is really obnoxious to see their posts in every forum. I guess I don't understand why they would do this sort of thing.

    I remember this too.
If I recall correctly Bitflipper offered or was voted for his services.

Ya know Mike.... I fail to see the reasoning. They could offer up perhaps 10 or so people (who would be willing to take up minimal admin duties, like deleting obvious spam) and put them up for a vote. Voting should be a privilege earned by having a certain number of posts or perhaps determined by the time someone has been a member. Then, if for some reason they didn't like the results, they could revoke the admin privileges. No harm, no foul. I see no downside as long as everything is understood from the outset, mainly that Cakewalk retains the option to revoke admin status for any reason and will by NO means give a reason if the privilege is ever revoked... then any potential bad feelings or problems are "nipped in the bud".
I think it should be three people and two of the three would have to agree (by PM) before deleting a post... after giving a warning and an explanation.

You may remember that I posted about the guy who allegedly used his car to bump a group of bicycle riders. I used bad judgment and included the guys personal info and the name of his business because I got it form the person who helped him get started in the business and I have known the other guy for years... still, it was bad judgment n my part and I deleted that part of the post. It was the thread that ended up with Bub banned (I still don't see why but that is another story)... I said all this to say that I was mad about the alleged incident and also posted it on TGP. I received a 'warning' from Scott @ TGP with an explanation... I have known Scott since the hyper threading HCGF forum in the 90s. They also deleted the post along with another post about it because it violated the TOS about posting someone's personal info, but I did not get banned, I got a warning and an explanation. Instead of just banning someone with no notice or explanation, a warning along with an explanation would be a good thing.

I think three mods with a 2/3 agreement requirement would work well. I think most people respond well to being warned and having an explanation (without anyone being snarky about it). Plus, in some of the small flame wars here both sides could be looked at and personalities could be considered.
Maybe my glasses are a bit too rose colored but I think some user involvement, trust, effort would go a long way toward heading off banning people (then again, I could be completely wrong and it could just cause more problems). There are people here who would fit the roles nicely. Perhaps one really level headed mod with a lot of patience, another who is more straight forward and pragmatic, and some one who is hard to rile and a peacemaker at heart. However, this isn't my forum. I am simply a user and I figure it likely that no one who could make a difference will ever see this.

    IMO...

Or alternatively people could just ignore them. I don't read half of what is posted here anyway, as I'm sure is the case with many other users, so don't really understand why it's such a big deal to not read something else.

Yes, agree that we all should ignore (not reply) to these spammers....

But unfortunately that won't stop Spammers posting (excessively) 'unsolicited' messages on these forums.... There sure is a lot of Spam accumulating regarding the same company which in-turn provides evidence of their activities.

If CW attaches a notice (Anti-Spam) then whoever is involved in spamming will know that they will be 'reported' and their IP blocked. FWIW they're probably using a proxy IP, but that might also be traced.

There could be several people involved here but at the end of the day, that kitchen company needs to be aware (notice served)!

CW should look into legal matters about this and if need be, report this matter to their ISP even if the Spammers are using a proxy.

Can anyone find info (laws) directly regarding this issue?

Most laws require an Opt-Out. But since this is forum related issue, a notice should be served to the company.  At the least CW could post a general 'Anti-Spam' notice that is clearly displayed on the footer of all these forums as a warning that spammers will be blocked and reported.

    Julien,
If Cake would allow certain members to be somewhat of a forum mod it would have to be for the sole purpose of deleting obvious spam only (such as the kitchen adds or selling shoes).
Not to moderate any other thread in any other way.
The 3-5 member idea is a good idea I think.
If I was a 'mod' I would open the thread and choose delete. Then as the other 'mod's' see it they would do the same. If 3 or 4 out of 5 mark it, it get's deleted.

I also can tell a spam post usually from the subject alone. Those I just pass over or go in and report it.
98% of the time another forumite has already reported it and Cake is quick to flush it..
The only time spam post's hang around for more than one day is on weekends when no one is in the office to kill it.
Cake actually does a good job with dealing with spammers.
