I miss the manual

Funny, but after downloading Essentials and now X2, I find that I miss having a copy of the THICK manual in hand...the SONAR videos are nice, but no substitute for nuts and bolts understanding in a comprehensive, textbooklike way and having instant reference onhand and not having to flip screens, get distracted by finding the exact point in a video for some info you're looking for,etc,etc,etc....is there a possibility for those of use who downloaded X2 to get a hard copy of the full manual? Do these even exist anymore? lol

Nothing like a good old manual to hold in your hands. Scott have you an index of topics covered in your new book?

Sonar still comes with a manual. Its a softcopy in PDF format. Its 1,956 pages. That's way too big to lug around. Just download it to your iPad or Smartphone and its good to go.

    Hi John,

SONAR X2 Power! covers the entire application and also includes all the changes and new features in X2 and is up-to-date for the X2a update. In addition, it includes all the changes and new features that were added in all the SONAR X1 updates... X1a, X1b, X1c, X1d, and X1 Expanded.

    Thanks!

You need the Sonar X2 reference guide - here http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/kb/reader.aspx/2007013290  all 35mb of it. Like it or not the move to electronic documentation has kept the cost down. Apart from cost and easier searching, electronic documentation also has the advantage of being easier to keep up to date. Its not uncommon to see "Obsolete once printed" on electronic documentation, with good reason. But having said that does anyone know if the reference guide has been updated for X2a?

One advantage of the printed manual was that every noob realised that "this is the manual, this is what one should read before turning to other people". And its massive size gave you an immediate hint that this is a software that requires some studying. I rememnber how impressed I was when I got it in my hand for the first time.

It seems to me there are more and more beginners popping in who really have no idea about studying by yourself and looking for information and solutions, but just wait to be spoonfed. You answer them "Do Bounce-to-tracks" and they answer "How do I do it?" instead of looking in the help files. IMO, too easy answers are not a service to the person. We should more often say: Check Help Files or Reference Guide.

I wonder if the existence of the Reference Guide is made known enough? It should be made so visible no-one can miss it.

Why don't Cakewalk follow Reaper's example and make big reference guides available on the Lulu.com print on demand site?
    http://www.lulu.com/shop/search.ep?keyWords=reaper&categoryId=200012
There are very thick Reaper reference guides available from there which are bound in a very handy large spiral format.  CW should do a deal with them whereby they get a royalty every time someone orders a print on demand Sonar reference guide.  It might not be a large income stream for CW but at the moment there is none!

I would still buy Scott's books because as someone already said they have the human touch and as tutorials are superb.  Sometimes though, I find I need the 'dictionary' to look up a very particular thing.

Its not the most obvious of documents to find. It should be included in the download / boxed copies in my opinion, OK it adds 35mb, but that's a drop in the ocean compared to the rest of it.  (NOW - somebody is going t say it is included but I am sure I had to get it as a extra download from the support pages)

I just use the Help => Getting Started Manual in X2. I don't care much for an "online" manual, but you can choose to make it offline, like X1 had. Comes with TOC, Search, and Index.

To equate the way things have gone to save paper, and reduce printing and shipping costs (primary reasons to exclude a printed manual), I recall a time in the late 80's or early 90's when my Dad bought some CAD software, or something like that which came in a box that was 8"x10" and 7" thick! It had six manuals, all at the very least 200-500 pages, one of them had nearly 1,000 pages. I would estimate these totaled about 2,500+ pages. The software came on two (2) floppy disks (1.4M EACH)!! You can download that software in less than a second on many modern Internet connections, and carry it around like a Word document.

In today's terms, packaging software like that may cost $20-$30 per unit to print (including packaging and print materials/ink, $1 assembly, $5 shipping. That's nothing when you see the cost of the software itself, but it is a reason to exclude printed documentation. I love the paper manuals, too, though, and I really was impressed at the package my Dad bought above. Paying for software in a substantial package like that made you feel smarter just opening the box!

This has kinda prompted me to really dig down in there.... and REALLY learn what is in there!

Edit > Preferences > File > Advanced in SONAR and select Always Use Offline Help. You may have to click the "Advanced" radio button at the bottom of the Preferences pane to see the Advanced section under File. I know, this sound redundant and cumbersome, but it makes sense when you see it.
