Wind/White Noise Synth Effects?
I need a synthetic wind/white noise effect like the ones used in a lot of house/trance records. Does anyone know if any of the X2 bundled instruments has a patch like this?

Not included, but you can add these, the Digital Sound Factory (DSF) add -on sets for Dimension Pro has a set called something like Hollywood Sound FX. That has some nice sounds for what you're describing.
Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

Do you have PSYN II (or I) ?. Just fire up some noise and play with the filters.

I use Native Instruments FM8, and have all of the old DX series sounds from Yamaha converted for use with FM8. One of those is a recreation of that wind sound from the middle of the Free Ride song from the 70's.

Several free ones to look at as well. Chimera is one I am familiar with that comes to mind off the top of my head. I would create a word document with a list of synths and as you surf patches note in this document which are your favorites.
the list of best free synths I personally like would include the following.
FREE SYNTHS and MAGWARE CM= Computer music BE = Beat magazine edition a magazine out of Germany. These synths are categorized as I would primarily want to use them. some cm synths may not be in the current issue they may be in a back issue from the first available issue with synths in the vault. For $5 you can get the computer music issues you want through zinnio.com I have yet to order a beat magazine though there are some synths available through them online at various sites they own these offers come and go and it is wise to read KVRaudo to keep up on what is new every once in a while just so you don't miss some bad ass free offers that pop up from time to time.

best bang for the buck synths that every beginner should consider IMHO after they have upgraded to producer to get the better versions of dim pro, z3ta and rapture.
OPX player has just presets and is only $40 for 400 + presets in OPX pro II by sonic projects.
Synthmaster is a great synth usually you can get it for 30% off if you notice the ads at kvr. expandable preset packages start at $15 each and the ones created by Nori are the best.
Korg's Legacy collection if you need a cheap portable keyboard they have a 61 key microstation that comes with the full package of synths in that collection. 5 synths all are awesome for vintage tones especially M1.
of course if you can handle it I think everyone here agrees that Native Instruments Komplete is a must have collection of synths etc....

I just bought Korg Legacy Collection (Now in 64-bit!) recently. I think the MS-20 might do the white noise wind for me...now if I can only wrap my head around the whole patch cable thing :P

You need to have a look at the Pentagon Synth (a truly underrated and underused Cakewalk Synth).
With Pentagon, you have white noise as a choice for the oscillators.
You can play with the Drive, Chrous, EQ and Output (Spread). Eventually you'll find the settings to put out a monster-white noise sweep, worthy of synths like Sylenth1.
For the Filter sweep, use the Filter section, of course using the Lowpass (or maybe even better) Bandpass. However, if I recall correctly, I think I actually preferred an outside filter (Fabfilter) instead.
Amazingly, there's no reverb in Pentagon, so you'll have to use whatever Cakewalk one you want, if you need it.
You can also turn on a few of those oscillators as saw, square or even sine, and then modulate the pitch over time to create a pitched-white noise riser. Also do the standard sidechain compression to make it pump.

I seem to have Pentagon I in my system, but it won't open when I call it up. Perhaps it's an old 32-bit install?

Dimension Pro has a number of noise multisamples in the 80 - Test Sounds and 90 - Noise subfolders. Rapture has the 900 - noise wavetable, plus many oscillators nearby that mix noise with pitched material. From there, it's fairly straightforward to enable a filter and assign the cutoff to the modwheel.
