X2 Essential or X2 Producer for laptop?
Can anyone provide some opinions on whether it is better (smaller footprint -less demand on resources etc etc) to buy X2 Essential (64bit version) to run on a laptop? I already own X2 Producer, but I was thinking it might be too much for the lappy? It is an intel i3 M360 CPU @ 2.4ghz - 4gig ram 128gig SSD thanks

You could download the 30-day free trial and check if it works fine, I think.

I already own Essentials 32bit...from an old project I was working on, but most of my good vsts are 64bit!! All I am after is some opinions on whether I should just use X2 Producer, or pay the $60 for an Essentials 64 bit version...seems there is no cheaper way to get 64 bit version of the Essentials pack...

Jlien X You could download the 30-day free trial and check if it works fine, I think. Well, IMO, if he already owns X2 Producer, there's little use for a demo, which also is Producer. I don't think there's any difference resource-wise which version you're running. The core of the program is the same in all versions, I'm 99% sure. It's just some of the heaviest mastering plugins that can cause glitches. Running a 64 bit system you could buy a little more RAM, perhaps.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Yeah - I would load X2a on it. Does your laptop allow for additional memory to be added? If so, a 4 GB strip costs around $20-$30 these days, if memory serves (pun intended). More memory would be a good thing in any case. I think the i3 would be a little slow, but would likely run X2a OK. Bob Bone

More memory and you should be fine for Producer.

Cheers guys, thanks for the info...I will investigate installing two new 4 gig chips then...I think it is pretty straight forward for Toshiba laptops.

joden I ran a set up similar to yours at one point for testing a system. it was a Toshiba Intel I3 with 4 gigs of ram. it ran pretty good actually. more than adequate for running sonar essentials and producer. more ram will give you more headroom over plug ins, exc. but you might find 4 gigs will be close to enough. have you pushed it yet with this set up ? I did and on that particular set up (the Intel I3/4 gigs) I was able to run 20 tracks with 4 soft synths and prochannel on 10 tracks/over 15 vst's. using up approx. 31 of sonars performance module (RAM) and 40% system memory. (that includes all system functions)

WOW!! Thanks CB - terrific info...sounds like my system will be pretty much identical and I won't be running as much as that...I might just give it tryout first after loading up Producer and THEN see if more RAM is needed... It was mentioned above the i3 may be a bit slow - can you tell me what your experience with it was? I mean did you NOTICE it being particularly slow, even though it did the tasks assigned?

I just meant that the i3 will not be as fast as an i7, but I believe it will be fine for running Sonar. Bob Bone

Thanks Bob, yeah I sorta already figured that I didn't mean it to come across as I thought you were hinting the i3 was inferior or anything I was more asking if he noticed and significant lagging on some things is all... The i3 (especially the over 2ghz ones) are not to bad at all for a budget cpu imo....I use an i5 quad 3.4ghz on my main set..

Yes, I know that. What I didn't know was that it is possible to install the same copy of Sonar on two different computers (since I don't own two). If I were the OP and had known it, I would have made a hasty decision and installed the existing Producer copy to see what would happen, without consulting with others beforehand.

the I3 is very fast, like bob said, not as fast as the I7 (I knew what you meant bob :) but depending on your needs if your going to be doing a lot of tracks a ram upgrade might be favorable. I think you will be pleasantly surprised though. I even tested one with a docking station http://us.toshiba.com/accessory/PA3778U-1PRP what this does is add another monitor so by using the one vga on the laptop this also gives another vga, so in essence you can use 2 monitors and close the laptop. but this dock does draw power from the laptop, but under the circumstances it ran very well. this was the I3 second generation. I think the whole line of the i3-i5 and i7 are great CPU's. of course the I7 being superior but the I3 is a nice processor and tops a lot of mid grade cpu's out there. one point in my life I was sold on Intel, until I started testing AMD CPU's then I realized something, for the price and for what we are using them for in our digital audio machines here. they are amazing. AMD makes an 8 core bulldozer. its a beast. I use the AMD phenom II black edition 6 core CPU in my custom built computer. I usually build between 3-5 computers a month, sometimes more, sometimes less. I can build a entry level daw capable of handling heavy loads with sonar for under 500.00. I wrote a book on computer building and if you ever get the cash and the time I suggest building your own, you can even salvage the old HD out of your old computer, I get that a lot from customers who fried up there old systems. they want to use it as a second storage unit.(sample library) I have ten videos that go with the book if your interested you can check them out here: this is the first one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFZ7ZrsTl3g

Cakewalk allows Sonar installation on an additional computer, but explicitly states that only one can be used at a time. Hope that helps. Bob Bone
