Alice Sweet Alice - First Single from New Album - FINISHED with a NEW STORY

Great song! My ear always goes to the singer--can't get enough of a good singer, and this is a good one.

My ear hears a lot of mid-high freq energy in the mix, which is shared between the rhythm guitar and the singer, especially at about 1:00+.

Have you tried sidechaining a compressor to duck the guitar, just slightly, when the singer's voice is present?

To get even trickier, you could try coupling a slight freq cut in the guitar in the singer's band--about 1200-2400 Hz--to whenever the singer's voice is present.

These are only slight differences I'm talking about, just enough to clear a little freq space around a singer's voice that I really want to hear.

I agree, this is a very nicely put together song and the singing just brings it full circle. Nice instrumentals and a great voice really make this stand out front. I really enjoyed this and it had my attention all the way through.  Peace be with you. Blessings, John

Good stuff!!  I may need to adjust my sub slightly, it sounds pretty good here in the low end.  That's one of those things that in the past I killed most of my mixes with, low frequency MUD. ;)  I run my bass in parallel - a DI and a mic'd cabinet which has killer beef.  It may be just a matter of pulling that up just a tad.

I know what you mean about the guitar and voice fighting.  I'll notch out that frequency (and/or do a sweep) and see if that helps.

OK, back from dropping the "chitlins" off at school.  Lemme dive in....

What I did for the low end was (in addition to tweaking my sub slightly), was pull my bass cabinet up in the mix, and I also brought up the kick a little bit and adjusted the tom mix.

I notched the guitar in the ~3000K range after a sweep which found that was the most competitive area (they're bussed so that was easy), and I pulled the female vocals slightly up in the choruses and the end of the song.

Give it a shot, and thanks again!!    So happy you all like the song.  It will be the first single from our new album.

Sounds great to me; adjustments just right. I tried it on three different sets, earbuds, PC desktop (cheap), and the nice ones with subwoofer.

I struggled to hear your singer during the verses when she is in her lower register. Add a nice vocal compressor on her and yo'll be set.

OK!!  I decided to focus on the low end, because I realized my sub's connector was playing games.  I also adjusted my crossover.

What I did was go to my submix and increased about 130Hz down just slightly as James suggested. I also added a compressor to her vocal and did a little enveloping on the volume.  I think it stands out better.

I think it sounds way better.  Let me know what you think!!! Thank you ALL for your help!

Thanks AT!  I already fixed the low end situation so I think especially now I'm going to wait for my mastering engineer to weigh in.  I just heard from him (he's in Israel), so I'll let everyone hear the finished product when he's done.  I hate to add too much low end, especially since it's a pop/rock song.

I learned a VERY IMPORTANT LESSON today.  MP3's really DO suck.  As an experiment, have a listen to this mastered WAV, and then another listen to the MP3 to see what I mean.  We had this song played on our local alternative commercial FM station last night, and I was shocked to hear it in my car.  I had sent them a 192kbps MP3, and that's what you all have been listening to.  I'm amazed at how horrible it sounded.

So learn from my mistake!  I called the program director, to find out if he had addded any processing, because like TAP I heard distortion with the guitars, pumping artifacts and it sounded like clipping.  He was like: "well we use Adobe Audition and then WideOrbit to add the songs to our system": and they are slightly compressed there.

I sent over the WAV to ask him to listen and see if there was a difference, and he was like: WOW - just send me WAV's from now on!!!  (My mastering engineer also recommended I send a minimum of 320kbps).

So anyway, do yourself a favor and conduct my little experiment!  Don't have a  heart attack like me! LOL! 

I never make an mastering mp3 anything smaller than 320, theres no need to unless it going on an ipod.
watch out for program directors too, ive had them give my mixes to interns practicing with sound forge or audition.
you call them back and ask them what was that ? and they try feeding you some lame excuse's on frequency modulation theory.
 
always send a wave, always upload a wav unless you can only upload an mp3.
