help with setup

hi; I have three questions;

I have been using Music Creator 3 because I love the score writing; this is what I use it for.  I seldom use it for recording.  I have looked at Finale etc. but nothing is as good as this program.

1. I want to know if MC6 has that feature but can't find any info on it on the promotional info.

2. I have had to re-install all my programs to my new computer.  I can't figure out how to get the sound the same.  I use to go into View/Synth Rack and click on rgcaudio and then transfer the track outputs to it, but nothing is happening.  I get horrifying tinny sounds if I transfer the outputs to Dreamstation2.

my ex set it up last time.  But he has limited time now for this problem and suggested the forums might help.

3. I guess I'm wondering if MC6 would bypass these problems or if it would be the same.


my OS is Windows 7, 64 bit.

    MC 3 is a 32-bit program not designed to work on a 64-bit operating system.
    You can try clicking the MC 3 icon and setting it to Run As Administrator, or if you have the option, Troubleshoot Compatibility. This might set up MC 3 to work in compatibility mode with Windows XP SP3 or other earlier OS. Or you might get an 'Incompatible Program' message.
    DreamStation DXi (or any DX effect or synth) will not work on a 64-bit OS unless you're in a 32-bit compatibility mode.
     
    MC 6 is a 32-bit program designed so it will work on a 64-bit OS. You can write notes in the Piano Roll View (PRV) or Staff View, but the notation operation is much different that you're used to. You can do it, but you'll have to re-learn how.
     
    On question 2, I'm not sure what you mean by "transfer the track outputs to it". Do you mean 'change' the track outputs?

    most people who want to write scores will prefer Finale over the Cake offerings. 

    For MC & Sonar, the notation aspect is an after thought..... they are designed to record, not to score. I have used it to print the midi out as readable music. I don't often do that but the feature is there in MC6 however, I can not tell you off the top of my head how to do it without the DAW in front of me. It's kinda not very obvious but it is there. 

    On the sound issue..... it's very likely related to sound card settings and synth setup and routing. The thing Greg mentioned also factors in..... 32 bit program on a 64bit machine and the OS itself can be an issue.

    thanks for the info, Greg and Guitarhacker.

    I think I will upgrade to MC6 and keep my fingers crossed.

    I don't use Finale or Sibelius because I find them clumsy and stiff compared to Cakewalk; I have used Cakewalk since 1998 and love it for scoring.  I arrange A Cappella for my work and this program offers so much.

    Sound card is Roland Edirol.  I know nothing about the tech stuff; this was all on the advise of a Computer God.  How do I figure out the sound card settings, synth setup and routing?  I'm horrifyingly ignorant of this stuff.

    Greg, in response to your confusion about transferring tracks, I probably used the wrong word to describe what I'm doing; I assign an output to the tracks.

    I'll get MC6 running and report back.

    Come back and let us know when you get MC6. It may work straight out of the box... one never knows until you try it.
