Write Automation problem "resolved"
The Write Automation is having no effect in mixing. As I have done many times, when I am mixing a given bus, having activated the "W" (glowing red), and having slid the fader in a given section to remix my bus, there is no change in playback...the levels stay the same as before. I have rebooted, but didn't help. Thanks.

Did you have the edit filter set to automation and volume?

I don't see anyplace in a bus to set an Edit Filter. Doesn't that just apply to tracks? I have several tracks feeding into one bus, and I* want to change the general level of all those tracks. Do I have to go back and choose Volume in each track? Have never had to before - unless I didn't realize that all happened to be set to Volume...but I don't think so.

I agree that it sounds like automation read is off. Is the automation info being written? Can you see the envelope? Are you using a controller or your mouse to move the fader? Are you playing the track when you move the fader? And yes, the busses have an edit filter too.

The Read (R - white or gray, not blue) is activated, I use the mouse to move the sliders while playing the track. I found the track Edit Filter in Clips>Automation>Volume, but do not see where this would be while in the Bus window. Once again, I have been able to mix the same way I'm trying now with no problem, and as far as I know, I have not changed any settings - it just quit responding.

Could it be Offset mode? Do you see a "+" somewhere? IIRC you toggle it with letter "o".

The "+" that Kalle is referring to will be beside the words "volume"and "Pan" in the track header area. If you see them there you are in offset mode that can be exited by pressing "O". As others have said check that the automation is actually present. The easiest way to select the edit filter is to press "T" with the buss "in focus" and use the HUD that pops up. With busses you'll only see the options "None" and "Automation". Choose automation and then the envelope you want to see which if present will have a colour beside it. Also make sure that the Buss "Read" button is enabled. In X2 it will be blue. If it has a diagonal stripe through it you have the "Global Read" bypassed. Change that in the "Mix" module of the control bar, it should be white when enabled. That should sort it out for you.

When I type "T" on the Buss in the side window beside the Track pane, all I get is a little window with the Smart Tools (*, arrow, cross, etc.) I don't see any choice for "None" and "Automation".

make sure you don't have automation write mode set to overwrite. this is in the track inspector. select the bus you're using, open track inspector and click on the "bus" tab. overwrite will start with the initial automation value and hold that value as the track plays back unless you modify it manually. a good practice when using automation writing is to globally turn off all write parameters when you're done then playback and draw in adjustments manually.

the pluses only show up in track headers, not bus headers. what happens there is the automation indicator that looks like a N disappears but no "+" is added to the parameter name.

That's the one - it's called the HUD. The selector is beneath the tools,to the lower left. There should be box to click on that produces a drop down. It probably reads "None" at the moment.

Yeah good point. The indicator in the mix module is the easiest way to tell. When it's blue overwrite is on.

Checked, and it isn't (hasn't been) set to overwrite. Also, I just noticed that when I temporarily turned overwrite on (in the Buss tab), the Write (W) button had a diagonal line through it, and was just red on top. Isn't that a good way to know if it's active? I still haven't seen the R turn "blue".

The "Read" button in the Buss header should look like this..... The same button in the mix module like this.......... (ignore the solo button) If Automation write is active they will be coloured red (or part red) depending on automation write state.

Interesting learning curb for something that should be simple enough?...Hello...I have a problem with this kind of thing myself...I can write, and pencil in volume automation...but it does not get read on playback, as well...Tried the button... R..all colours...no go. Not doing any complex grouping ...Just on individual tracks....So I will also check out some of this info.... ...Thanks for posting, and all the others trying to help!

Sorry for delay...interrupted by the reality of my day gig. Are your screen shots from X2? I can't find anything that looks exactly like that - looked in track and console views. There are similarities, but I haven't been able to make the picture correspond to what I'm seeing - nor have I ever been able to get the R to turn blue - only gray and white. Is the "mix module" part of a buss in console view, or a separate entity? The picture you gave me for the "Read button" doesn't look like anything in one of my buses (two buttons next to each other). Sorry to be so dense, but Scott G. also said he hasn't seen this problem, and had no suggestions. May be my descriptions of the problem are not clear. Thanks for your help.

Yes - screenshots are X2. Top one is my master buss header. The other one is the "Mix module" in the control bar. Right click on the control bar and show it if you can't see it.

The "R" and "W" can be found in the console view, the track view or the inspector. If the "R" in the control bar (the one up top) is white, the "R" in the buss will turn blue when you left mouse click on it. If the "R" in the control bar is gray, the "R" button in the buss will not turn blue. When blue it will read automation when it is gray it will not.

Yes - sorry I wasn't very clear in my post. The top screenshot is the header control which is per track/buss. The mix module control is the "Global" control. The global must be on for the track/buss to read automation. If no tracks or busses follow automation then chances are global read is disabled. If it's only some tracks or busses then it's probably those tracks/busses individual read buttons.

Does this happen in all projects or just one? I'm beginning to think that there may be some corruption of some sort. Ref. the colour of the buttons.... the only way I can get a grey button is turning global automation read off and even then it has a diagonal line through it to indicate that it is off. TBH I'm head scratching now.

The end result of this problem is it went away just as it came - for no apparent reason. I was going back and forth with Sonar supt., and the problem just went away - so we couldn't chase it down any further. Kind of an anticlimactic ending to this thread, but I'll take it. Thanks for everybody's help.
