Inserting lyrics - there seems to be two methods?? Please advise

I have started working with inserting lyrics in the staff view.

By accident, I discovered that there are two different ways to do this.

The default way: you input a syllable for each note, and it advances automatically.

The other way just allows you to type words on a lower line, with no association with the notes.

For printing, I like the second method better - but for the life of me I cannot figure out how I was able to enter the lyrics using this method, and now can't seem to do it anymore.

Anyone know what is going on here?

Are you sure you weren't using the lyrics view (Alt+Shift+1) when entering without associated MIDI notes? I have used that in the past. I don't do a great amount of lyric inclusion but AFAIK there's no way of doing that in the staff view without associated notes.

Actually, I think I was using the Expression line - which actually works better, so I think I will keep using it.

    Thanks.

Yes that'd work.  Good idea, might try that myself at some point.
