The Avitar 45 is interesting. I've just never got the bug for an 18/20 or 36 watter. Thanks, I didn't know Avitar was making amps. Last I knew they were just making cabs.. cool.
For a cab I will have to check and see if Crusty is still making them. I had a '78 JMP50. I sold it to Crusty maybe 10 years ago. It just didn't do it for me. I can wire up an amp but I don't build cabs. I have three 5e3 tweed cabs and a few 5f1 cabs I need to do some building and put them to use. I use one for "utility". I have a 150w Emi Texas Heat 12 in it and I normally run a Crate Power Block through it. It makes for a light and very portable setup and cranked, it sounds GOOD. Running the POD2 through the line in sounds like the POD through phones (IOW... a LOT better than the Flextone III). There are some SS amps that I like a LOT. The Power Block was a class D power amp, small and powerful. Crate built a larger combo amp around it with effects and stuff but it turned out to be nowhere as good as the Power Block. I think it is a no-brainer for every gigging guitarist to carry a Power Block for backup, you can put the head in the back of a cab or carry it in its shoulderbag. I don't know what they go for now on ebay or CL but they were about 100 bucks before they stopped making them. They are voiced a lot like a JCM-800, throw an EQ pedal in front of it and it will do anything It loves OD and dist pedals too... I LOVE cheap stuff that is better than it should be. It is also stereo, 75x2 or 150w bridged... whats not to like?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PmOKwtFaPI I looked, tried to find a good video featuring the cleaner tones of this amp. There are a few but the playing is sub par. Everyone always seems to want to do an amp demo with too much gain but anyway... It sounds best to me either with the level above 12:00 and the gain just shy of 12:00 OR with the level lower and the gain at 1:00 to 2:00... stil you get the idea. It kills with a DS-a, a Tech21 Comp-Tortion, or especially with a Jordan J-700. Those old Jordan pedals are really awesome. They go from "Rocky Mountain Way" to "Spirit in the Sky". Somehow they start off as distortion and dial up to fuzz.... GREAT pedals.
I need to get mine out now... I wish amps were not so heavy. I like to play downstairs but keep most of my amps upstairs. The CVR gets little use, JMP-60.. not much, Valvetech VAC... not enough. Flxtone III, VOX ADVT15 and Crate Palamino V-16..re use... along with Silverface Champs, tweed Champs, and Powerblock get more use because they are light... my fav for volume and umph is the CVR though. I had it modded. Added a switchable N feedback loop (makes it pretty much a Vibroverb), moved the reverb so it is only on channel 2 (makes it much deeper and adds gain to channel 1). Changed the 5881s to 6L6s, but I change them back and forth. Added 2 Emi Ragin Cajuns... it sings!! The Valvetech is a nice amp too, the JMP-60 is a little lackluster but still has it's place. I have two 60s Jordan 2x15 stage amps, SS, LOUD... actually sound retty good. Trivia: Led Zep used them at their first USA show in LA.
Yea, I like amps better than guitars...
