Session Drummer 3 With Producer 7

For years now, I've owned BFD 1.5 and still haven't figured out how to use ity properly. Grant it, spending 10 minutes 5 times a year won't do much ... anyways, before I get too old and croak, I'd like to figure out one of these drum software doohickies so now I'm curiou about Session Drummer.  I have SD2 on my Producer 7.
OK, I can listen to the included drum clips but, that's about as far as I can go.  I really like the visual of SD3 and would like to learn how to string drum loops into songs with it.  I've got a good selection of loops from SmartLoops and Groove Monkee.
I'm disabled & disgruntled now, so I figure I'll fill my time with learning this stuff properly because time is all I got ... no money, just time ...

First ... can I upgrade to SD3 to begin my new adventure OR does that force me to upgrade to a newer version of Sonar?  I'm really happy with P7 as it gives me all the necessary functions I need.
Second ... I bought the BBE disk from Cakewalk years ago and it worked fine up until Windows 7.  I have it on my XP Pro laptop and it works great.  Won't even load on my Windows 7 system (32bit).

Thanks
