Yep, another fine Batsbrew production. Nice and tight well played and produced. I really like the bridge/ ending .... takes it from Hatchet to Jeff Beck.

Great stuff

you know, i'm finding that some folks are commenting after listening on laptops, and computer speakers, and i'm learning that translation is all over the map!
LOL

i was listening to my clock radio last night.....just before going to sleep, i was reading something...
and i heard 'roxanne' by the Police, come on.....

i was listening to the bass line-- what little of it would translate thru the little 3" speaker on the top of the clock radio...
and two notes of the 6 or 7 repeating notes, would play, and none of the rest would.
they would just disappear.
LOL again.......

you just can't mix, to translate on every little system, that much is for sure.

i find that if i add too much low end..... for thump...
and too much high mids and highs, for 'thock'.......
then it messes up everything else, when you playback on a really nice system.

so, the moral of the story is, mixing is sometimes about finding the best compromises!

at least, that's my story.....

True. If it helps, I was listening on a pair of ATH-M50 headphones. I use these for tracking and creating my "first pass" mixes. I switch to monitors after that...

Kick translated just fine on a little pair of Sennheiser ear plugs... sounded fat and solid.  Cool tune and nice guitar playing too.

sounds great as ever BB. you do use quite an old-fashioned approach to mixing which works really well (not approaching -0db!) and gives your songs a soft edge when listening. not long enough is my only nit.

thanks man....
hatchet to beck...........!!
heheh
that's a pretty good spread...

beck was one of my formative influences...
started around 'beck, bogart and appice' and continued from there

i never met any of the  hatchet boys, back when i was gigging fulltime in jax, florida, but i did meet their girlfriends.
LOL

true story....

dcumpian-
thanks for the follow up....
yep, i know those ath-m50 headphones, they are pretty common in a lot of studios...

you know, you mention 'first pass mixes'....
i've decided to mix all my first and possibly 2nd pass mixes in mono....

and THEN hit the stereo button on the master buss and spread some things out.

i think you can nail 'levels' better in mono, than stereo...
and then stereo, lets you fine tune with pan positioning and clarity of parts.
i don't know, i just think it's a simpler approach, and possibly less time consuming, instead of chasing panning ideas just to get parts to sit.
i already know in my head, where most parts are going to sit, even in the tracking stages.

philz
thanks for listening, phil
sennheiser ear plugs, SHOULD give you plenty of bottom...
if you have mud in the mix, it'll show up there quite quick.

Hey, Rob, you have my email address, I'm pleased to be able to listen to anything you have.  Paul Goddard is a solid , great bass player.  I like the fact that he uses a pick for non-hard rock/metal music.   i remember some guys posting up here a couple years ago stating that people who touch bass strings with a pick should basically be hung.  They went on an on (I never heard of any of them) and I thought, oh how wierd.  I can finger pick but prefer my sound with a pick.  Of course, I'm not as good as a lot of the players but a lot of our music is bass driven.  Simple but solid.  So, Paul Goddard, one of my bass heroes.  Oh, his band (ARS) isn't too bad either.  LOL

yes, i like proper gain staging!

LOL

[soapbox on]
a lot of modern mixes sound harsh to my ears...
and i would bet, if younger folk who had not grown into loving music by listening to overly smashed masters and too hot mixes, had come into music back in the vinyl days, they would understand the concept more easily....
[soapbox off]

as far as the length, i think maybe i mentioned it in an earlier reply, but i figure most folks that don't normally listen to 'instrumental' rock, can tolerate shorter arrangements better...
and the guys that dig that kind of stuff, always want more!!!

heheheh

plus.....

i don't use up all my good riffs in one song.

warren
i met paul, way back in jax florida, around 1979

i always dug his solid groove, and choice of tone.

i play bass both ways, fingers and pick. (well, i also thump funk-style)

i like the sound of both, they both are needed.

The track is awesome but a real drummer would make it perfect!   You did real well though otherwise!  Being a drummer I just never really dig programmed drums.   I happen know a drummer who could nail these tracks!! :)

appreciate the comments!
actually, i kinda prefer the superior drummer in a way....
it's got a really tight feel, which i like....
i've done a lot of tracking with drummers, in fact, my entire first album was all live drums...
but for this kind of stuff, getting a drummer who can really nail the groove and vibe is hard around here.
they just can't do it.

You seem to have nailed it Bat, and I'm sure that wasn't without a lot of effort. Are you playing all the guitar parts here? You have fast fingers.

The mix even shines on my cheap cans...sorry it was all I had to listen on where I am. I can say it translated well on even those.

philip
thanks philip!
i suppose that means the kick, and all those translation questions, are of no issue with your playback?

i've already made some changes on this song now, and i'm still planning on re-tracking a new bass line, just to see if i can improve it.
i'd like to try to methods, one a kind of 'funk' bass line, and another more aggressive bass line ala chris squires, or andy west.
