ultra slow first edit in clips

Normally, editing clips is no problem, but now at the beginning of a session, the first edit of any clip takes ages and ages to process ....after this first edit all following edits take place normally. This problem is a total nuisance and I don't have a clue where to look to solve it. Any suggestions?
